Any repairs should still be covered under warranty as a part of the powertrain warranty. If the diagnosis is you’re just hearing things and there isn’t a problem then they can charge you for the shop time used since it isn’t a warranty problem at that point.

correct. they’ve done a 14 mile road test and let it run for 2 hours and couldn’t replicate the issue. I told them to keep it, and run additional test. im
making sure this gets put in writing, just in case out of warranty, it finally shows its self.

First I would take off the serpentine belt to eliminate any of the accessories being the cause. Then I would use a stethoscope to see if you can narrow down the location.

Could it be a loose heat shield around one of the CATS maybe? Sounds like a thin metal vibrating to me. When you rev the engine does the sound stay the same or does it change pitch and/or volume?

did not try that. i was thinking it could be possibly that, but the Toyota Techs could not replicate the issue, which is telling me that its not that. I think its internal and intermittent. we shall see what this little gremlin is. Ill keep this post fresh with any new info.

Well here’s the update. It went into the shop on Thursday 10/17/19. Received a phone call yesterday 10/21/19 telling me they did a road test and let it run for 2 hours and couldn’t replicate the problem.

They said they could try to replicate it while the truck was cold the next morning. Well now Today 10/22/19 they called me and said they were able to get the sound to happen again and said it could be the manifold area, valves?? They are unsure of where it could be, but are doing further investigation.

My concern now is OWNING this truck outside the warranty period, being this is the 4th time this truck has been in the shop. Definitely a concern of mine.

To top it all off, I have my 2nd vehicle in the shop (toyota pickup) getting worked on, and have no wheels, other than my wife taking me to and fro to work, lol. Tis the season. :(

So what was the outcome? I have a similar sound....sounds like thin metal vibrating....so I'm thinking heat shield but haven't found it yet....annoying but not concerning.

Post it. Could save alot of headaches and the community could get to the bottom of this. Why ask for info PUBLICLY and then relay that info you've received privately? If you won't recipricate it and give that info to the people you asked for help.. that's messed up

I noticed it when I did my spark plugs and reinstalled everything. I narrowed down the noise to the little foam padding and bracket that holds it and blocks you from getting to the very first driver side plug (the one closest to the firewall). Took that bracket and foam piece off, and the noise went away. Shrugged my shoulders, put it back on and never thought about it again. Like I said, that was 47k miles ago and no issues so far

    pm from AdventureKid,

I have no update on what the engine noise was... it never happened again, with my knowledge... im still in the factory warranty period though, at 59,800 miles... It does concern me, as im the 200 miles from being out of warranty and this noise still cant be resolved...

Usually heat shields will rattle when stepping on the gas and letting off. Sounds almost like someone tearing small pieces of paper, or may even be coming from the serpentine belt.

Anyone Ever Figure This Out Or If It’s Normal?
I Noticed This Exact Same Sound On My 21 Tacoma Off Road Recently, I Took It To The Dealership And They Said It Was Normal But I Don’t Completely Buy In.

Sounds to me like something is loose and is resonating at certain points. Heat shields? I'd check every nut/bolt and contraption I could get my hands on first. Belts can make the strangest noises as well. And a belt change is cheap and easy to isolate things.
