Are Gen 3 Tacomas as unreliable as Tacomaworld makes them seem?

2017 OR, coming up on 20k, zero issues. I do have a 10 yr/120k warranty though.

I think the resale speaks volume for the reliability. It's not scarcity driving that. I've only had mine for less than a year, but I do have 2 toyotas in my driveway with over 200K miles that have had very minimal repairs, so I have faith in the Tacoma.

Of course, one of those toyotas is actually Yamaha....

They’re great cars, so long as they’re under warranty.

This 2020 is my 4th tacoma. I beat the crap out of the other 3 and got over 150000 miles out of them with no issues other than oil and filters, tires and brakes. I expect this one to be the same.

2020 TRD Pro. coming off a 2000 ford ranger that has 178k (and still going strong) and never had any major issues.
We looked at everything out there, test drove everything. We were looking for a vehicle for our overlanding trip across the USA, up Alaska to Prudhoe Bay, down across the trans Canada highwway to Newfundland, then eventually South America. Nothing hard core off road.

Could have got anything out there, came down to the jeep rubicon, taco and 4runner. Chose the taco based on reliability, looks, options, creature comfort and price. Price being the major factor. $46.420.26 OTD
could not pass up the taco on price alone.

So far @ 3k miles we are really happy with the taco. The ride is really nice on road (I have had 3 major back operations) trans shifting is acceptable, no rear end whine, paint is flawless for black.
Build quality and fit and finish are really good.

Like others have said, you will find people complaining about a Bentley....

Bought my 2015 production 2016 OR after having a 2nd gen for 5 years. The 3G is a huge leap forward. I like Toyota's conservative vehicle development model because I didn't have to learn much to work on the 3G coming from the 2G, and parts are more common. I think it is important to realize Colorados/Rangers, etc may ha e more features, more options, better fuel economy, better interiors, etc...and if those things are important to you then they may be the better choice. You really are paying for the reliability with Tacos. The chassis hasn't changed in 15 years, but it has been tweaked and evolved. It's not a new redesign with new problems every few years. Regarding frame rust, I'm not sure they want to address it. They need something to fail on the truck so people buy them more often than every 20 years.

My 16 had a squeaky body mount and the headliner was cut short (both fixed under warranty). The latest Ovtune has made the transmission act how you would expect, but I hear the latest models are much better than my 16 was.

Two things to know about this place.

    1. This truck sucks.
    2. All other trucks suck a whole lot more.

Seriously though, I'm a Chevy guy, I've turned a few wrenches. I got my truck four years ago and put 87,000 miles on it.

The truck isn't perfect, but it's pretty good and I have no plans to get rid of it.

I'm not a truck guy, historically always a sports car guy. But I needed the utility of a truck. This is the most practical vehicle I've ever owned.
2019 trd or 4x4 with 23k now, its been excellent. I love this truck and never thought I'd be able to say that about any truck.
Highlights- the obvious haul-ability, off road several times/month for various activities, excellent street manners. Quiet and super comfy coming from cars that you try to keep streetable but road course oriented.
Love the old school interior layout that still feels modern somehow? And it looks great.

    Welcome
Don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds like you're already scratching for an itch, or looking for a problem you don't yet have, because you don't even have the truck. Any time I see someone who just sold their 1-2 year old vehicle, aside from life changes, I'd guess there's
two main groups- one group just like new/want something different, but I'd bet the other are ones that look for every flaw that keeps them up at night.

Seems someone has money to burn.

What good is a showpiece, when it is at the dealer getting repaired constantly under warranty?

The 3rd gen section is full of problems, that normally should not happen with newer vehicles.

And for those who say it's only 5% that experience problems (probably more like 90%), hope you are not that 5%. Costly mistake.

Knock on wood - My '16 has 83k miles and no issues. The original clutch, original brakes, the factory battery lasted 4 years and everything is just as it should be.

Same here. My '02 Is300 was an absolute tank, but I can do so much more with a truck, especially this one. Plus living in the North East with summer roadwork and winter snow, a sports car just gets trashed no matter how hard you try. Bought an '18 OR in may of 2019 with 11k on it. Its got 35k now and has been a dream. I'd never own anything else.
