Are Gen 3 Tacomas as unreliable as Tacomaworld makes them seem?

Enthusiast forums are where problems get blown out of proportion. Being an M-series guy I would assume you know this by now haha. Any car is just a clusterfuck of 10's of thousands of pieces put together so they are all bound to have some issues. I'm at 15k right now on my 19 OR and yeah the 3rd brake light leaked, repaired under warranty, the clutch pedal started squeaking which I'm still debating even taking it in for the TSB or not, and I got the fuel pump recall. As far as reliability, I define unreliable as an issue that leaves you stranded or limping home; both of which are things Toyota is not known for. There's a reason they have the reputation that they do. Is a weeping diff annoying? Yes. Is it going to leave you stranded in the desert with no phone service or civilization for 200 miles? No. Also from what I've seen the paint issue was mostly with the Blazing Blue Pearl, which sucks because that is a beautiful color. I can't speak to the transmission issues because mine has a jiggler in the middle. That being said I have absolutely no regrets buying this truck and fully expect to run it past 200k. Hell until I bought this truck I didn't even think Toyotas came out of the factory with less than 150k on them.

My 2019 Pro has had zero if the issues you mentioned OP. It’s been flawless for 20k miles. I looked at the Chevy ZR2 but the styling and interior lost out to the Tacoma. I had a 1st gen prerunner and loved it so I knew I was probably going back to Toyota.

If you can hold off for a year the 2021 Ford Courier, (Baby Ranger) will be out.

I pretty much stopped reading right here.

The answer is no. If you stay off of here you probably won’t have any of these problems.

I have 65k on my heavily modified 17 Pro and the only complaint I had was the transmission shift points and lack of low end torque. I’ve since fixed that problem with a tune.

Out of everything he listed, this is the biggest complaint and one of the “easiest” to fix. It costs a bit, but there is so much you can do with a tune.

I personally don’t care about the shifting. I notice it for sure, but until the truck gets FI, I’ll leave it stock

Thr only "problem" i have is a slight diff whine at 60-65 which you can barely hear if the music is off. Doesnt bother me one bit.

Other than that, my truck has been great. Best vehicle i have owned. You will not be dissapointed.

It’s too early for day drinking. Back to the 2nd gen forum for you since they have zero problems.

    PS, hows your frame doing?

Well, it looks like you are back to your old “bearing false witness “ addiction. Hopefully you get some help with this.
This guy has been trolling the third gen forum since early 2016, which should tell you something.

    Sad...

Whaddaya mean? He owns a second gen, spends most of his time in the 3rd gen forums, and has filled his signature full of quotes "supporting" his position. Seems like a nice guy with absolutely no mental issues at all.

A lot of people complain about these trucks, but the numbers don’t lie. These trucks are extremely popular for a reason. All of the concerns you brought up are really rare, but made more obvious by the loud minority on TW. I’ve never had an issue with my truck, and don’t know anyone that had any issues with theirs personally. My 2016 did have a leaking rear diff, but was checked for the recall and repaired, rental was provided free if charge by Toyota. The bed is strong, 15 years not of plastic beds and most cracking issues come from overloading or heavy shells with off-road use.

These trucks are very solid and reliable. People tend to whine on here just like their differentials. People on here often don’t know the difference between refinement and reliability. Also add in the fact that it’s 2020 and everyone has to be offended/victimized.

Guaranty any BMW Forum will talk about many more documented "flaws". Or any other car maker Forum. Don't worry about it.

You basically always transport lumber in the bed. Let’s be realistic. Tacoma is famous for having a weak rear spring. Even without load, it will sag in time. Save yourself the headache/buyers remorse and get a full size. You’ll notice ,loaded, the tacoma gas mileage goes south fast . It’s just not a nice fit for your needs. An honest opinion from a taco owner . Btw I love mine for what I use it . Occasional camping, fire road trails.

It’s almost as if brother @tomwil thinks he is on a mission to save the world from the evil 3rd gen Tacoma.

I have heard tell of false prophets before.

    Guess it’s true.

believe it or not, there aren’t a lot of problems (in my experience, but I have only owned M3’s, which came up to about $800 every other month on my E46 toward the end when I sold it at 220k miles), but they are CRAZY maintenance heavy. Haha!! By the time they hit 100k you have basically replaced the car ;)
