Manual transmission noise

I’ve owned many manual transmissions and the one on the 3rd gen Tacoma is the loudest when shifting. There’s a loud clanking coming from down under when shifting. I’ve assumed it is normal up until recently, but now I’m wondering if it was a incorrect assumption. It’s not a grinding noise that sounds obviously bad. It’s more of a clanking metal sound that occurs after the shift is complete.

 

Kinda like shifting into first on a harley?

 

I’ve never ridden a Harley. Dirt bikes only; albeit my dad has a 1965 Honda Dream that I got running again years ago.

 

What kind of manuals did you drive? Also how many miles do you have on the truck?

 

4 speed on my 1974 Datsun pickup. 5 speed on my 1981 Datsun pickup. 4(?) speed on my ford pinto. 5 speed on my ford ranger. 5 speed on my Subaru Forester. Might be forgetting a few. The taco is my first 6 speed. I’m still screwing up reverse vs 1st gear. Not cool in some off-road situations.

The 2020 OR has made the noise since brand new.

 

Shifting a bit notchy for the first 7500 miles or so on my 18 while it broke in, but no clanking. I would have the dealer validate it.

Gotcha. I was curious if this was your first longitudinal setup and since the transmission is actually next to you if it was just more audible for you. Anyways, I have the 5 speed, so not exactly the 6 speed but I find mine to clunk as well if I shift fast or aggressively. It used to be very clunky when it was new. I guess it broke in for the lack of a better term. I find that you almost have to drive like a dump truck and give it time between shifts and it shifts smooth and quiet. Just my experience. I’ve definitely driven better transmissions my self but hopefully these are as reliable as old Toyota manuals

 

I'd have it checked under warranty. My 2019 MT OR doesn't make any clanking noise. However, I stored some crap in the bed box and that made a bunch of noise. I thought something was wrong with the truck until I figured it out. Also, my ball hitch is a sloppy fit and that makes noise over bumps.

 

This is not a crunching sound of gears locking up. I’m used to that sound when I screw up. This is a clanking noise that follows a successful shift.

 

Ya I could maybe describe it that way. I haven’t noticed a change after warm up, but I will pay more attention to that in the near future.

 

Is it while you’re engaging the clutch after a shift?

 

Sounds like a sticking clutch fork, maybe. Or the TOB isn't dropping back down the input with the fork.

Shoot your favorite flavor of lube through the inspection boot. NOT toward the engine, obviously. NOT WD40 or similar either, please. Some white lith spray could work.
Cheaper and quicker fix than a dealer.

 

It's a far cry from the 6 speed in a WRX but I've never had any clunking on mine OP - 12k miles. As others stated, especially if you dont think it'll be a problem for the dealer to replicate the noise, I'd have it looked into under warranty.

When its in neutral and you move the shifter around, does it make the same noise?

 

I thought it was my hitch making noise, its actually my tranny. We are talking about when going over bumps in neutral right?
Its a pretty loud clanking noise. I took out my hitch and realized it was the tranny.

Never had MT make a noise like that when going over bumps in neutral. Even if you just move around the shifter in neutral, it will make that noise.
