same here. i have the original bfg mt and they have never hydroplaned on me. of course in the snow most of the time it is still loose or they salt the piss out of the roads. but most of the "bad experiences" is people not knowing how to drive in the condition they are put in. for example, if there is standing water on the road where you can hydroplane, slow down. if there is packed snow or ice, use 4wd and make smaller corrections in the steering and gas/brake. if you have a manual, use your engine to brake.

one thing i dont mind spending money on is my truck, so i say go ahead and get the m/t. you only live once right. as dad always tells me, there is no point in making money you cant take to the grave. may as well spend it. of course he is retired now and only works because he would go crazy without a job

here is a nifty tidbit for people that are interested. its about hydroplaning

the formulas for hydroplaning is roughly 9x the square rt of tire pressure.
this figures it in knots. 1 knot is roughly 1.15 mph

ex. if your tire pressure is 36psi then 9x6 would equal 54knots. 54x1.15=62.1mph

obviously there will be a little variation depending on tread and tire width and such but it is pretty close

it's starting to get colder here and i've notice the tires have lost a bit of pressure so i need to pump them up a bit

in sharp rocks the duratracs chunk, but they do good in mud, stick to rocks, and rated one of the best in snow

there is no comparison...... none whatsoever. mt's are like night and day compared to at's. the only thing at's are better at is driving in rain on pavement. that's it.... I will NEVER go back to at's.

    the duratracs feel like M/Ts

a/ts are better in snow, rain, ice. Siping is what makes the difference. most M/ts have no siping. But that is also what makes them rugged on rocks. the siping allows chunking. Some aggressive ATs are basically MTs with additional siping

Im not going to say that all a/t tires are created equal. the 3 A/T tire that ive run that i would compare to an M/T with siping is the Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs, the BFGoodrich commercial traction T/A, and the Cooper Discoverer S/T.

I would not compare just any AT to an MT

All 3 ATs handled anything i threw at them...

ive also run the first MTRs, the KM1s, Nankang Mudstar, and Dunlop MudRovers...

In true mud i loved the original MTRs and KM1s

exactly, i suspect a lot of people are comparing non-aggressive at's to mt's. ALL mt's are super aggressive. AT's have a wide range. If you're gonna compare them, the AT's better damn be similar to duratracs.

but still even modern ones like the km2s suck decently in the rain. Or for me they do. But thats not their purpose. They work well in every other situation ive thrown at them but just in the rain I drive more slowly more cautiously.

I just put on my second set of Firestone MT's. I would put them up against any tire on the market for an MT. Plus they are even cheaper than the BFG AT. IF you have to ever go in real mud you will discover that the AT from any company is useless. If an AT gets you through a trail then you are on a road not a trail.

Have to disagree with you on that one...

But, I will agree with your Firestone M/T comment...they are badass from what I hear. If I ever do go to the M/T side, I will be doin these or the Hankook Dynapro M/T....

X3 on the firestones, I have 2 sets, ATs and MTs that go on when i'm off road.

When I got my truck it had BFG ATs on it, and they sucked, they were noisy and I didn't think they were that good off road either. I ended up dumping them early with about 1/4" tread and getting the Firestone ATs, much better ride.

So i sometimes wonder if all these high opinions of BFGs are just from a mob sheep that have never tried anything else.
