What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

yeah, not sure what the final quote will be. the old quotes that i have from ARE are 3000 for a topper with a roof rack, so i was figuring on paying in the range of 2500.

 

if i can get away with 2200 for a new topper then i'll be happy. we'll see what they say. was that quote from Big Sky Toppers? was that an ARE? and was it a V series or a CX classic series (assuming it was an ARE)?

 

I bought a used Snugtop Super Sport off a fellow TW member here for pretty cheap.

For S&Gs I called up the local topper dealer and they quote me $3200 for the exact topper.

For the same topper plus the color match paint job I need to do I'll be $900 all in.

 

Thanks for the heads up. Just to be sure, are you saying the early 1st gen 96-00 had hood clearance issues or 1st gens in general? I looked on their site and put in my vehicle info for my 02 3.4L Tacoma and it shows part #

C1755. Sounds like the VH010665N radiator for the 96-02 4runner will work as well

The cleaning makes sense. The back of my cab is rather gross. It gets cleaned about every 2 or so years when the topper comes off for whatever reason.

 

What brand is that? If its the one i had bought a few years ago, it will break. Complete garbage. (Got off Amazon) I think i still have it on my tool box so I'm hoping its not the same one. I got another one that i really like...but of course i don't know the name off the top of my head. Lol. I'll look tonight. I used 2 of the new one i grabbed. (One in the empty airbag and i did a clock delete, which i miss my clock now. Lol)You have the ability to screw it in and put a nut on the back side. My ham handheld was to heavy for the double sided tape

The brand is Koomus. The overlanderunderbudget member has been using it for a couple of years with no issue. It's just going to hold my iPhone (XR) so I'm hopeful it'll hold.

Yes preheat. In general it's a good idea to preheat bit pieces like this when you're welding.

The gussets don't fit ultra awesome. In fact I'm going to grind my other one just a bit on the lower section for a better fit. And I beat the top outside tab in a bit as well. So triple check before you burn anything in is all.

 

Are there any concerns in changing the point of failure with gussets? Ie it won't bend, but can crack?

But we did find out that he did not preheat or post heat. So he didn't weld these on right and on 2nd gens it is very important with their spindles.

As long as you preheat and post heat well you'll be good.
