Did all 2004s come with daytime running lights?

    Weird question.

I'm really only first exploring the 01-04s as I have owned a 98 for 20 years prior. Now I also own a 2004.

I'm looking to do @crashnburn80 's awesome detailed headlight upgrade but see that the kits claim "will not work with daytime running lights."

So I ask... did all 2004s have daytime running lights?

Capt Obvious chimes in: "Hey Dumbass McDoofusson... why don't you turn the truck on a see for yourself?"

    Valid question. However...

Previous Brosef owner did all sorts of dumb (IMO) "upgrades" which included, but not limited to:

    1. HID installation (since removed)
    2. Remote start (which is tied into the parking lights somehow because they blink once, maybe twice, when the remote start is engaged)
    3. Remote door locks (which are also tied into the parking lights because they blink when unlocking or locking the doors).

So I have no idea if the DRLs were messed with during all these installs.

Also have no idea where to check the connector which has the white/green wire which is often cut to disable the DRLs. Or if the fuse was removed, etc.

Lastly, if the DRLs were disabled in such a fashion, would those headlight upgrade kits work with them? Or still a no go because the factory wiring is still there, etc?

    Thanks for the feedback.

    And ridicule.

Canadian trucks had headlight DRL as required by law. If the DRL was disabled the headlight upgrade would work as documented. Aka, if you can turn your headlights off with the truck in gear the upgrade will work.

Just out of curiosity, how does one add DRL to a non-DRL vehicle?

My truck has DRL but the thing is that they always are at full intensity. When I toggle the headlight switch, it does nothing. It just stays the same intensity. Normally, DRL are like 50% intensity and when you turn the headlights on, they go to 100% intensity.

Truck is american, so when it got imported to Canada, it had to have DRLs installed if it didn't have the option already.

So, what could be causing this? Problem with DRL module? Incorrect installation? Or maybe is it just how DRL on our trucks are designed?

Just a guess but since your truck came from the USA without the DRL`s the way yours are wired would be the easiest to make it Canada legal .

Without doing a complete DRL install .

Who would have done the install a Toyota dealer or whoever was making the truck Canada Legal to be sold

Are your DRL`s also tied into the parking brake and all the other DRL controls

Just off the top of my head .

it would be simple to just complete the head light relay circuit to ground lights come on with engine running .

Headlight switch controls the tail lights and a second path to ground allowing the head lights to turn on with the engine off

Thank you for this. Now it gets interesting.

Looks like DRL was factory installed on my truck, however there are no DRLs and signs of it being deleted, as far as I can tell.

Also when I google "DLX" trim package it was it's the base model. Shouldn't have a tachometer in the gauge cluster, etc.

But my truck has power everything, including mirrors, TRD package, tach gauge, etc. More Toyota "wtf" trim levels.

All 2001-2004 Tacomas (as far as I know) start as "base" trucks, although almost none were finished that way, @Madjik_Man. Your truck has SR5 and TRD OR trim and would have gotten a number of the upgrades you're seeing.

Gen 1 DRL, if my memory isn't wrong, work when the lights are in the "off" position. There's no way to turn them off at the stalk, unlike the DRLs on Gen 2 trucks.

Derp... should have seen the TRD OR and SR5 packages.

When my truck is one and in gear, there are no DRLs. With the stalk in the "off" position, the headlights are off.

My 2003 is a few states away right now, @Madjik_Man, so I can't run out and check, but here's how the DRLs are supposed to work for that model year per the owners manual.

Checked my vin and the truck didn't have DRL as an option

Apparently, the easiest and simplest way to achieve DRL without a kit and relays would be to bypass the headlight switch so that they always turn on when the truck is started.. which has the incovenient that they are always at 100% intensity and it's driving me nuts lol

Have you yet determined if there is a "DRL Relay (main)" installed under the dash below the ignition switch, as shown here? If it's there, it should be possible to get it functioning. That's where the infamous white/green wire is. I just disconnected mine a couple days ago (didn't cut it though, so it can be reconnected easily - if you are lucky perhaps this was done with yours).
