So many people forget it's pretty much a prequel to US Marshall's, which is also great. Fugitive is better IMO though.

Hey guys anyone have an “extra” bed cap? 3rd gen short bed. I’m thinking sleeping in the back seat of the cab might not be the best for a road trip but a new cap is like 4 grand. I only need it for a month or so too. Just curious. I dint need anything fancy just to keep the rain out.

My wife was telling me if you lime your lawn four times a year, I think that that controls the grubs or prevention . I am not sure where she got that from but maybe something to look into

IDK about THAT truck but no way am i buying a 3to truck with 35K for $30,000! Especially when I can get a brand new one for only 4k - 5k more!
Hell I wouldn't even let my dealer do a dealer swap to locate the one that I wanted!!! They had to order mine in!

A new, basic cap can be had in the 1,500 - 2,000 range. The only way you get near $4k is a completely optioned out model with a lot of add ons.

That said, keep an eye on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. I found mine for my Tacoma for $700 and I traded a BAKFlip VP from my F150 for a cap (BAKFlip was like $600 new). I’m sure you can pick something up for under a grand and make your money back on it by selling it at the end of the trip.

I did read up, the gen 2 caps don’t work well because of the tailgate. Do you have any experience with fitting a gen 2 cap on a gen 3 and if so, your opinion: would it work for a few weeks?

yeah I might invest in one to resell afterwards. I’m going up to Maine for the 4th with the dog in the truck and will try just sleeping in the back seat then and see how it goes. That will be a test if I panic buy a topper the week before I leave :D

I paid $400 for my 3G cap (color matched!) last summer and $370 for my 2G cap. I sold the 3G cap for $700 and the 2G cap got me nearly $1,000 in the insurance settlement.

If you do get a cap @taco-houla make sure you put protective film on your bed sides and tailgate. My cap shifted in the two months I had it and it rubbed a mark into my paint. It's fairly hidden, but it was no bueno.

I kept telling myself I'd like a cap, but I found them to be more annoying than anything for my personal usage. I had an ARE V-series on the 3G and a Leer 100R on the 2G.

    thanks for the advice!

I would use it basically only for trips. If I wanted a full time covered bed I’d have gotten a 4 runner instead. Which is why I’m hoping to “rent” one this time around so if it turns out I don’t want to keep it up with the short bed for camping/travel I can just return it and not have a commitment.

where did you get your cap that cheap? Facebook/CL?

Sorry, can’t help with the fitment... My trucks have had a blue oval on them for a while now, haven’t kept up with what kits on the Tacomas across generations.

The 3G was on FB, the 2G was on CL. Both times I messaged within 20 minutes of them popping up and was on the road 10 minutes later. They were stupid cheap, but worth it.

For my usage, the cap simply wasn't ideal. I bring my snowblower back and forth to my Mom's in the winter and while the tri-fold tonneau kinda stinks (the snowblower hangs off and the wheels are on the tailgate, so I put a sheet of plywood down), the snowblower wouldn't fit with the cap window open either. I got a really big hitch platform when I had the 2G and because of my lift it was more of a pain to get into there and was super sketchy. I thought I'd like it more on the 3G and within a month it wasn't for me. The profit from flipping it was nice, though.

    lucky bastard.

yeah I know I don’t want one long term. And a slide in is too much for what I use it for.

I’ll keep looking. I found a few in the 1k to 1.4k range which I could probably “Flip” for the same I pay for it but that’s still a lot.

all this talk of the Tacoma support for aftermarket there are loads and loads of F150 shells on CL and FB :p
