A 285/70/17 is only 0.06" taller than a 265/75/17. Never tell any difference in gearing, or anything else except width.

Yeah I think I’ll go with the 4.56 gears. Good for on and off road.

Well it’s not just how big the tires are. It’s how much stuff you add to the truck. When you add more stuff there is going to be more weight. If you’re climbing hills you’ll notice the difference.

Sorry if I missed this in one of your other posts, but what kind of weight does your truck have on it as in bumpers, campershell, skids, winches, etc.? I have 31" tires and about 800lbs extra with bumpers, wildernest campershell, winch, cab rack, etc. without anything loaded in the bed. Once the bed is loaded the back end is typically pushing 1000 pounds with an 80lb dog, ski/bike gear, camping gear, and then the rear bumper and campershell. If its summer and I have bikes, there is another ~100lbs. I do have airbags/Dakar/Billies to help support the load, but my truck has always lugged along and I almost never put it in OD because of this. I am selling my Volkswagen Vanagon this spring and am planning to put the money towards 275/70R17 tires, new gears, 2nd battery, and sliders/skids so an additional ~200 pounds will be added to the equation shortly.

Thinking the 4.56 would be good but it seems like the guys that like the 4.56 gears, and have 33" tires, don't have much armor or weight adding to the equation. I will definitely be over 1000lbs of extra weight once I install the additional mods listed above.

    06DCLB V6 4x4
Front: Billstein 5100 set @ 0.85 and OME 885 (should have gone 886). ~2" lift
Rear: Billstein 5100 with Dakar Leaf Pack and Airlift bags ~2" lift

So what’s the consensus on a 2008 V6 AC 4x4 automatic stock gears on 285/70 17s (33s) towing between 3000 - 4000 pounds ( camper and gear) ? My gas mileage is horrible .:( Other extra weight is heavy rear bumper and sliders . 4.56 ?:notsure:

I did my gear swap about 2 weeks ago to 4.56, so far I'm enjoying the lower gearing, just seems more drivable. As for mileage I don't keep track so no help there, but there's not much you can do to help your mileage while pulling 3-4k lbs.

Glad to hear your 4.0 is doing good with 4.56. I have a 2.7, I haven't done anything yet, but as weak as the 2.7 is, at lower rpm., I'm thinking 4.88 may be better for the little weak puppy.

4.30's, maybe 4.56's if you never plan to go over 55mph. 4.88's no f'n way with 33's, 5.29's will blow about once a year, the tooth contact is toooo minimal (I went through 3 sets)

285s was perfect with 285's. I have an AT. My trucks on the heavy side and I really liked the balance it had. MPG did not change much and I did not expect much out of it. I was unsure of going bigger on my tires and as most mentioned 4.88 is a lot for 285s. Flash forward 6 months later I am now running 315's and wish I had done 4.88.

If you remotely are considering bigger tires go with 4.88 if not 4.56 is a great gear ratio for anything under 35/may under even 34s

def spot on. but usually its because folks are on the bigger tires and heavier trucks. the 4.56 still feels pretty decent even with the 315's but compared to how it felt with 285's its a big difference. I also did add bigger heavier tires, rear swingout, big ass tire on the back that doesn't help here. S/C will fix all this.

Sorry if this is somewhat of a newb question but im a little confused on the difference between the $1500 dollar re gear kits and the $260 ring and pinion re gear kits from companies like nitro or Yukon. My Tacoma isn’t 4x4. Just wondering if that makes a difference?

Great read, I think the important thing is reading different peoples setups and experience with their trucks.

I'm personally lamenting over this issue, I'm a '14 DCSB with Tonneau fully armored top to bottom front to back on 285s75R17 those actually measu out at 34.4 ish, they stand almost as tall as my trail tires, a second set of Cooper EVO 35s thats I found measure at 34.8".

I'll drive some pretty hairy stuff on the trail, but it's so rare I get free time to wheel that daily is my more serious concern. I do a good amount of distance family trips often with a fully loaded back and a 4 person RTT and box on top.
I was leaning towards 4.88, but a few buddies have said they're pushing 2500rpm-2700rpm at 70mph on highway with 35s and 4.88. I'd prefer not having to hear my motor revved up that high when cruising long distances. I'd be ok at about 2200 I feel. I may consider a 315 AT tire in the future too, so the question is 4.88 or 4.56. 4.56 seems the better daily gearing, but I can't help but wonder if I'm going to suffer on the highway with all the extra drag and weight. I'm not looking to be a hot rod or spin the tires in 3rd gear, I just want to take a little work off my engine like it does now traveling on the 3.73s and not have it trying to jump to 2nd on steep mountain passes.

I’m an automatic trans, 2013 DLCB, 6” lift, and dirty 5ives. I don’t wheel anything crazy just dirt roads and some hard to get to places but NO extra weight like bumpers, winches, racks or running boards. Just a softtopper canopy. I got 4.56 nitro gears front and rear. They run great I love them stepping up from 3.73 but personally, if I were to do it again I would go 4.88.

Why do you say? You want more hot rod or it still feels laggy like stock? I'm more worried about highway cruising on 34-35" AT loaded.

I've got a '15 DCSB 6-speed MT, full armor, 33's, roof rack, higher cap on the bed and a bunch of other weight soon (drawer system and camping gear). I'm waiting on 4.56s from ECGS. I know I'll be slightly overgeared but with everything I've done and the possibility of pulling a small inflatable boat in the future, I did not want to worry about not going low enough. My rpms will be slightly high (2700-2900) on the highway at 70mph-ish max but I'm willing to deal with that to have better driving/off-road truck.

I considered 4.30s for a short time but the difference in rpm from 4.56s was only 150-200 at 70mph. If I were to have an AT with the same loadout, etc. I would have gone with 4.88s.
