While Toyota dithers, f150 offers hybrid/inverter power in 2021

Regardless of Toyota’s class leading durability, they are continually left behind in performance and features. Toyota isn’t “that” serious about trucks.

 

Resale.........first year model.......not for me thanks. I'll keep my antique....

 

No argument there. But a first year model in any brand has growing pains. Look at the 3g Taco. Toyota has theirs. They just happen once every 10-13 years. While the Tundra and Taco are reliable, many fewer buy them compare to f150s.

 

No question, my son is still driving my second gen Tacoma as we passed it along to him. That would not be the case with the American trucks I have owned, at 100k they were money pits.

 

Every truck I’ve had has been a Toyota. But I live in the rust belt and their reliability means nothing when they begin to rust. Fords have literally taken over here with their aluminum bodies. Besides, they will now offer you an instant “whole house generator” when the power goes out or you need real electric power at a job site. Just saying, Toyota is not serious about competing with real truck performance.

 

I've had 3 f150 rentals. 2 of them had issues.

One of them was literally off the lot, I was the first person to rent it. It was the 1st year the 10 speed had came out. Holy shit it was like driving stick shift for the first time. You know when you switch gears and let out the clutch way too fast so the car bucks forward? It was like that. In traffic, it did that almost the whole time. The thing literally bucked forward and I got whiplash every shift. It obviously wasn't supposed to do that and that specific truck had an issue.

2nd one I rented literally wouldn't shift out of park. I moved the column shifter into D. The gauge said P still. R N D all didnt work. It was stuck in Park. I didnt even get to move it off the rental lot... after 30 minutes of the rental place trying to figure it out, they put me in another f150 that worked. I later found out on google there was an active recall for it.

I like they way they look and have always wanted one. Especially with the 2.7 EcoBoost. Tuned with cats removed they're ridiculously fast. It also gets the same mpg as my taco. But the reliability thing scares me especially seeing it first hand, twice..

I do nothing to my Toyota’s other then maintenance for the decades I’ve owned them. But, they have never filled the all round needs I have. My neighbor has a diesel ford he uses for traveling, towing and plowing. I have a Toyota, but I also need a Kubota and an ATV to do all the things he does.
Toyota has become a car company whose side line is making Trucks. Ford is a Truck company.

 

I live in New England, I know your pain with rust. My son and I are lucky to be alive after a corrosion related accident in a Ford, it was totaled. Like the idea of the aluminum bodies but that doesn't translate to the frame or components underneath.
You should see the size of the calipers on the rear of my Ford transit work van… They look like they shared parts with the focus, LOL

 

I hear you. I paint my frame with wheel bearing grease and spray biodegradable motor oil in body panels and frame members I can’t reach other wise. It has worked and all have been rust free ...but it’s a PITA.
I personally feel the frame rust issues with Tacos are no worse then that with any other truck I’ve seen.

 

I totally feel you on this, for example the gladiator will soon have a diesel making 442 tq. Or like the EcoBoost engines, really fast. Theres a trade off with Toyota's. They lack a bit of excitement vs other brands but the reliability is worth it to me. I might try something else one day idk yet.

Toyota used to offer superchargers for the tacoma and tundra, don't know why they stopped.

 

I dont think toyota thinks of their trucks as a side job. Tacoma's are the best selling midsize truck. It's something to be proud of for the brand.

Toyota knows where to put their money. A good example would be heavy duty owners, the chances of them switching over to Toyota is very low since those owners are brand loyal, so they arent gonna invest into the heavy duty market. The midsize market however, money maker for toyota. What happens when some owners of Tacoma's have families and need bigger trucks? Tundra.

The tundra is getting the new 3.5 twin turbo next year I think for 2022. They wouldn't invest in this if trucks were a side thing to the brand.

 

A factory option super charger for the 2.7 would be just the ticket. Heaven forbid they should do it by 2030

Btw, bought a hold over 2015 OR instead of a new first year 2016. Never regretted it. I never buy first year.

They couldn’t sell enough. It cost the same as buying a new full size v8 just to put a factory SC on a v6.

I wouldn't say Toyota isn't serious about trucks, they actually market them to guys who want a "real" truck. In addition to my Tacoma I also own a 4X4, 2014 F 150 supercrew with the 5.0 and hang out at the F150 forum. It is truly a different world. Guys buy the Toyota trucks expecting 400,000 miles, the F150 guys are excited to see 200,000.

I strongly disagree with this. CAFE standards are killing F-150 trucks. The average MPG of all cars and light duty trucks sold by all manufacturers has to be at a certain point. Toyota sells enough cars to keep their average high and they don't have to worry about fuel mileage on trucks.

Ford on the other hand has to. While Ford advertises 1/2 ton trucks that will tow and haul more than a Tundra try finding one. Roughly half of the F150's sold each year won't haul or tow any more than a Tacoma. Many less. 80-90% of the Tundra's will tow/haul more than a typical F150. Most of the F150's out there come with 3.3L or 2.7L engines mated to 3.15 or 3.31 gears to get fuel mileage. Virtually all Tundra's come with 5.7L engines mated to 4.30 gears.

3/4 ton and up are exempt from CAFE standards. If you move up to a F250 or F350 you will get a real truck because Ford doesn't have to worry about fuel mileage.

You disagree that Ford is a real truck company when Toyota is not, then you go ahead and prove my point by bringing out all the other HD truck products that Ford makes and Toyota doesn’t, and that is when you get, “a real truck”.
Let’s face it. The f150 shares many components with its larger brothers.
I agree that ford owners have lower expectations for longevity, but they have much higher expectations for performance.

There are a bunch of we sub 200,000 mile drivers who will trade based upon rust and safety features long before 400,000 miles. We are the norm.
