Hey guys - I'm trying to update my ECU to the latest 04B14, mainly in anticipation of ordering VFtune and the tune pack, and also to test out my "off-brand" Mini VCI cable. Got the cable working (drivers were a bitch for Win10 and 64-bit), and techstream can connect just fine. I was able to read configuration, get health status, and update some basic config items (like the turn signal blink count).

Then I go double click on my new CUW file, the wizard opens . . . and doesn't work. Says it can't get the configuration ID from my truck. Any thoughts?? All plugged in, battery tender, key in on position, just like the instructions said.

I have nothing here. Folks have struggled to get a stable connection just for customizations. There was one person that said they successfully flashed with an inexpensive cable. I can't recall his username.

All that I know is that the Tactrix is the least expensive adapter that is reliable.

    Sorry!

The seller is the best resource here for driver updates or troubleshooting.

Bricked ecu from a cheap cable would quickly justify the price of having bought the good one

Hey man, I love saving money too. The cheap communication cable could cause a incomplete ecu update. Most of the reviews I saw were this doesn't actually work along with some I felt were paid spoofs saying it did.

I would never ever use the cheap cable.

Even a cheap battery charger can cause a bricked ecu.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
I use the mongoose cable... expensive. But it’s not going to drop halfway through a flash and brick the ecu... has happened at work with a worn out cable... not fun

Can you post a screen shot of the error?

Also, listen to everyone else here.... Don't flash TSBs with a cheap cable. The potential for disaster is too high.

If you do it, make sure you have a damn good backup plan. Depending on how if goes FUBAR, the only solution the dealer is going to give you is replace the ECM. There is a way to recover it without the dealer, but it requires a good cable, removing the ECM from the truck, some wiring, and the OVTune flashing software.

@CRCs Reality is in that area, and had offered to flash TSBs at one point. You can see if he is available to help.

Well, I decided to just bite the bullet and buy the VFTune and the proper cable - figured I’m gonna do it eventually, so why wait!

Definitely a good decision. While you could have held off getting VFT, using a trusted cable is the right move.

Well since the real eventual goal was the 2.0 SFOB tune, I’m just gonna do the whole damn thing right now
