    https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/carplay-adapter-to-convert-to-wireless-carplay.2193978/page-68

"Carplay2Air and Carlinkit are exactly the same thing. They use the exact same firmware files and behave exactly the same way. Carplay2Air relabels and resells the Carlinkit under their own brand, and they provide some end-user support. But honestly (and this is just my opinion) you're better off buying it directly from Carlinkit as they're the ones who actually make the product, and I personally have had good responsiveness from their support (with the caveat that they are in China, so support hours don't align very well with the USA and their English is limited)."

I recommend buying from Amazon as the guy who posted the above recommends due to the issues I had with Cplay2air version and returns if needed. Plus its a hell of a lot cheaper. However Carlinkit has several versions to choose from, the one you want for ours is much more expensive than some of the other versions as seen with this post:

"Yeah Carlinkit did not do a good job at all of differentiating between these two very different products. Sadly, I'm sure a bunch of people ordered the wrong thing because the android version is much cheaper.

What you want to look for is the word "Activator" in the product listing. And in the description it should state that it is meant for cars with factory (wired) CarPlay. All of the other listings are for a different device meant for people who mount an android tablet in their cars and then use that adapter to get wired/wireless carplay onto the android tablet screen (which I assume is not what you want)."

I saw that, but it lists a 2015 Tacoma so I thought the applicability list might not be that accurate. And I’m just trying to make sure I don’t buy one for $160.00 when there’s one available for $40.00.

Look at my post above, it has a link to a macrumors thread that talks about both of them, it's the same device and uses the same firmware. You just have to make sure you buy the correct device, because they sell different versions. I don't think the $40 one is the correct version for our truck.

I added more to my post just now, there are a ton of different carlinkit versions, so make sure you read up and get the correct version.

Someone recommended this one and said you could save $40 by getting it shipped from China

Okay— can somebody please post the link to the one that is actually working the best for the 2020 head unit? The previous posts are muddled with China discount versions, model/firmware update discussions, etc... Thanks!

They are all pretty much the exact same device. There is a thread over at macrumors I believe where they confirm it and all use the same version software. Personally I would go with the Amazon version if I had to do it again because of their return policy, just have to be careful and make sure you get the right one cause there are a few different versions on amazon that aren't the same device.

Carlinkit is the same thing, cheaper (was, who knows with covid economy), and purchased/backed by the Amazon returns policy. Go check out the macrumors thread, there is an ebay branded one, an Amazon one, and this one above. They use the same site to update the firmware.

Looks like there is a newer one with a detachable USB 3 connection through carlinkit.

I used the carplay2air adapter for a few months. I liked it except on long trips the Qi charger would overheat my phone to the point it was unusable for a few minutes. Had to go back to wired for charging so no sense using the adapter anymore :(

Was the overheating problem with an iPhone or Android?
