Ready for adventure (tepui hybox tent x pelican NXT bandit kayak)

Just picked up a kayak. Its super entry level but should get the job done while I dip my toes in the sport. Tied it down in the bed without an extender and didn't have any problems getting it home. Do I need a bed extender for a trip down to Oregon (from Seattle)? Let me know what you think!

 

I haul my 12ft kayak unsupported in the bed (tailgate down of course) all the time zero issues. I wouldn't hit the trails with it like that, but otherwise it's fine.

I rented a 14' kayak a while ago and needed a support for that.

 

What do you like about these NRS straps? Never heard of em but open to all good gear!

Hell yeah there's room and if i had something in the bed other than the kayak, id close it. Picture is below is not tied down but just wanted to check the clearance. Need to figure out the height incase of bridges. Will check and post next time!

 

2 things about the NRS cam straps vs ratchet straps

1: They are closed-loop so you never have to worry about a hook slipping off
2: They won't crank down and crush your kayak

My local kayak shop won't even let you take their rentals if you use ratchet straps.

 

@Grindstone nailed it. I've carried a metric shit ton of WW kayaks for I can't even tell you how many miles using NRS straps. I hate to admit it but I had a Dodge Ram that no shit, I had 14 boats tied on, wish I had a picture of it. You can get them in any length you need and there's no GD hooks involved.

You should be fine transporting it like that but I still recomend picking up a cheap bed extener. Harbor freight sells them for 60 before the 20% off coupon. Also DON'T use rachet straps on a kayak they apply to much pressure and can damage the boat.

+1 on the HF Bed extender (with commiserate pool noodle mod). Took a 13.5 SOT tandem up to the river this week..

 

Used the NRS straps to tie it down today!
