I'm gonna fallow this Nikola company for a few. I'm curious if their conventional EV truck will gain some traction against Elon's...truck?

That Tesla truck looks like it fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. I like the looks of the Nikoli truck.

 

I thought they (Nikola) was focusing on commercial? Is rivian still a thing? I think there will be a few all hitting the market at once. Which is why I’m kind of surprised Ford didn’t do a full electric for the new generation.

 

Both. The Nikola truck is the Badger with production slated for 2022. Haven’t seen any prototype videos out yet.
Riven has a prototype out, there are videos.
Lordstown Motors Endurance truck scheduled for Jan 2021 production, probably optimistic. Good experience already with their Workhorse background.
And then Ford will jump in, in a couple years but they are behind the race for now.
Should be interesting.
Guess I should mention the Tesla El Camino truck but I hate it, likely to be a hit with the tech soy boy crowd though.

 

Electric, self driving trucks will end up looking like a door wedge...They don't need a driver so there's going to be a direct aerodynamic slop to the top of the trailer...then again trailer shape may change as well..because they are built the way they are because you have to fit a driver. What if they were hollow down the middle...a tunnel for the wind to pass through and cargo is loaded around it...it could split open in the middle like an alligator jaw...things can get weird when you don't have to safely accommodate a human.

 

my senior project in college was an autonomous boat. It was that reasoning, a vessel needs to have life jackets and seats and fire extinguishers and radios and registrations. Etc.

But our goal was data collection. So we could get a large RC boat, load the bitch with batteries, and do our stuff for days without needing to worry about people.

PS the wedge is not the most aerodynamic shape. In normal scenarios for trucking (as in not supersonic, in air, etc), the most aerodynamic shape is a tear drop.

Truly fully autonomous vehicles that can handle any roads are still many years and likely decades way. You’ll see human drivers for a long while

 

I think investing in nikola is a big gamble. They are a long ways from production, and when it starts being profitable other major automakers will come out with all electrics with similar or better range/features for less money because theyll design them to use existing parts from other cars to cut cost under what the news guys can since they mostly are starting from scratch.
It probably wouldn't take much to put tesla under either since they are pretty much a burn barrel to dump in money.
I think nikola is to late to the game to really ever do anything, by the time they get the bugs worked out, theyll be behind.

Looks like they decided not to pay the one declared in March until July, and then the dividend declared 2 weeks ago was a cut and also will be paid July.

 

Must...resist...buying...
