I bought the Sport and while I love it, a biggie (for me) is that the Off-road is the only one that has space for a second battery under the hood on the passenger side. Yes, yes, there are side-by-side setups, etc, but for AGM weight distribution I'd pick the OR.

Plus why did they put that hood scoop on my truck, making me lose about ten feet of visible space right in front where I need it most when crawling through the woods?! /smh

I wanted 4x4 in an access cab with a manual transmission. Toyota made the choice of trim for me.

I honestly am not sure what the difference between the SR5 4WD and the Sport 4WD are. In my area they both run about the same price used and with similar mileage.

That is what I am thinking. They both run about the same price in my area.

The SR5 has a sticker price about $1800 less than the OR and Sport but obviously are less equipped.

Gothcha. In my area both run about the same price TBH and if I'm paying the same price id rather have added features than a "cool" hood scoop haha.

I find that curious. The MSRP for the SR5 is $27,825 and the Sport is $32,725. They were definitely not the same price when I was shopping in 2016. I test drove the 2016 Sport and SR5 and bought the SR5. Traded in the SR5 for an OR 4 years later.

Did you compare "Like" Configurations of SR5 and Sport, Example both 4x4 Double Cab Automatic as they should only be about $1800 difference

I did a quick online price check for SR5 4x4 DCSB Auto and Sport of the same Configuration:
    $35,190 MSRP - SR5
    $36,965 MSRP - Sport

The way I looked at it when I bought mine is the OR can do everything the Sport can do but vice versa is not true.

I vote sport because the sweet looking air dam gives me at least 10 mpg more than you off road bro’s with 50 more HP thanks to the skewp....

In all honesty OP I agree with the above posts - you’d probably be fine with either- and you could always save money by picking an SR5 or a sport…. Although in my area sports are sometimes more expensive an off-road‘s which is weird... Since you are going to be upgrading the suspension with a lift… Why not do it right and upgrade the suspension to a more improved product over the stock billies anyway? Shoot… Look at the Buy/ sell/ trade thread, if the stock Bilstein‘s are that great you wouldn’t see guys left and right ditching them immediately... They are definitely more capable than the stock sport but if you’re going to upgrade the suspension anyway why not just get a better set up? For that reason the only real benefit that the off-road has to me is the crawl control and locker coming from factory which it sounds like you don’t really need.

you could also add a locker in future years if necessary … If you don’t the standard 4 x 4 will be more than sufficient like already said. Unless you definitely want the hood scoop I would probably just save a bunch of money and get a Sr5 and upgrade the suspension wheels and tires sooner/ locker if needed.. if you only care about the hood scoop in the sport you could go buy somebody’s scooped hood if that’s what you wanted.
There really isn’t any wrong choice here welcome!

I think that is available in OR trim as well. Could be wrong but I swear I saw some when shopping.

OP, this is a good discussion and I hope the back and forth helps you pick the right truck for your needs. You really can't go wrong. A few comments that may help guide your decision:

First and foremost, for the kind of driving that you plan on doing, know that you will be in great shape with any of the models you choose. There are some amazing rigs on this site -- and some folks who do some incredible serious off roading (and dare I say overlanding). But for 99% of the rest of us, every Tacoma in the product line will be able to do the off roading that you are talking about. People like to say the Sport is for the road and OR is for the off road. I have a buddy who drives his Sport on some crazy bonkers trails in Northern Quebec and has never once had an issue. I also know folks with more capable off road vehicles getting stuck on those same roads and needed to be pulled out. The point is you do a pretty good job of being realistic about what you need in terms of off road use and the Sport will be way more than fine.

Second, each of these will feel different to you so my recommendation is sit in them each -- SR5, Sport and OR -- and see which one feels better to you. I can't tell you how many times I have known non technical people (and I include myself in that lot!) who decide they want Model X only to sit in Model Y at the dealer and go in a totally different position. Happens all of the time.

Finally, and I know this sounds crazy but get the actual, physical product brochure. Here is a simple exercise that I helped a friend with to find the right Tacoma. It works for rank amateurs like me because we are no where near the experts on this site. You might find this useful. Read through the whole product brochure with a big red Sharpie marker. It is not long. Only 20 pages or so. Every time you see a feature that you really want circle it. Then when you are done take a blank sheet of paper and create three columns -- SR5, Sport, OR. Take the items and put them in each column if that feature is available on that model. You would be surprised how much that clarifies your decision..

    Hope that helps ...

To be spot-on clear - is this a true statement: generally with a lift any differences in stock suspension will go away. A SR5 w/ OME whatever vs an OR with OME whatever is the same. Once that's done the differences between them become electronic (via gadgets and the locker) yeah?

yes and no. SR5 with upgraded suspension is similar to an OR with the same upgraded suspension, but the OR has the locker, upgraded head unit, different interior, mirror turn signals, black fender flares, crawl control, etc etc... its electronics and appearance stuff that’s different. But with your argument, An SR is also the same. A lot of the stuff on on OR can’t easily be added to SRs or SR5s.

got it - I was talking about purely from an off-road capability standpoint. The electronic and electric stuff, functionally, are the differences. I am buying an SR5 because it came time to pull the trigger on a truck - though I wanted the OR, none were viable and I am running out of time. Though the SR5 i'm buying is already lifted exactly the way I'd have lifted an OR, it does miss a few things that I'd liked to have. Just had to make the choice; and then save for on-board air and a locker - though I think I'll miss the gadgetry simply installing hardware can't fix.
