Just got the CMC after getting 295s and am going to put a coat of something tomorrow for anti rust. What have you guys used and what are your experiences?

Cosmoline is the best IMO. Fluid film works great but doesn't have the staying power that cosmoline does. There's a reason the military used it for storing weapons

A good quality spray paint bedliner or undercoating. Just clean it real well with non oil based cleaner. Cosmoline may work but I would think road spray and rocks would wash it off.

Will spray paint stand up to rock chips or will I need to reapply every so often?

Hard to get spray paint to adhere to the backside of the CMC with virtually no prep. I prepped and painted the front, cosmoline the backside.

    Would prep mean sanding?

Everything. Sand, degrease, etc. Always in your best interest to put your best foot forward when engaging in rust prevention. Ounce of prevention, pound of cure and all that nonsense.

so if im going to have a shop install them, not to trust them to do this.

buy them, prep them, and give them to the shop painted, ready to weld.

No no, all that takes place after it's all done. If u already bought the plates, shiny Bright metal is the best u can prep for them. U can tell them to leave them bare if u feel like doing it yourself though. They'll probably do a good enough job unless u live in the rust belt.

Not for long term reliability, imo. Even if painted, the weld area / heat affected zone will certainly cause corrosion
