I would say that if you are the sole provider for your family, an area like salt lake might be a better move in the long run. Much more technical industry options instead of the 'country' life down south. When things slow down in this state/ nation, it is better to be near places with some job options versus zero options in rural Utah. The oil/ gas industry is also big, but hit or miss in this state as well. It isn't too far of a drive from SLC to southern utah on a weekend. I used to also be from So-cal, so driving 3-4 hrs is nothing in this state especially with zero traffic.

Offroad fab is hit or miss in this state as well if you are looking to make a living off of it. People don't have money burning a hole in there pockets like they do in So Cal. People aren't willing to spend $700 on a pair of sliders (not sure what you sell yours for, but you get the idea). Just something I noticed after living here 4 years.

I had a company called Tactical Electrical do some work at my place multiple times. They aren't the cheapest but they do quality work and are small (2 - 3 guys). They initially did a meter base upgrade to 200A, and then replaced my feeder line to the house and added a subpanel to my basement.

    I appreciate all the feedback.

Where do you live in Utah now? What part of SoCal did you come from? What do you do for work? How was the transition? Do you have a family of your own? Sorry for 21 questions lol

We went looking this weekend and made an offer on a house in Hurricane. It came down to a house in St. George and the one in Hurricane. Our realtor advised us for investment, the Hurricane house was a better buy. It's probably 5 mins or less from the entrance of Sand Hollow. The neighborhood we'll be in is going to be pretty sweet when completed.

No, it's called Pecan Valley Estates. Right now, there's the house we're buying and one more currently built. They are building a model home and probably 2/3 of the currently available lots are sold. They will have a future phase 2 that they are calling their estate lots. Those are probably 2-4 years out and will probably start around $500K for the lot. The one we put an offer on is a little over .5 acre. We did look at a couple in Dixie Springs though.

Gotcha. I liked the Dixie Springs area when we went there. I really like that there is so much awesome adventurous stuff so close by to that whole area! Congrats on buying a house there man!

Just left SLC and I can't believe how many Tacomas I saw. I'm really surprised Utah doesn't have its own region here on TW. I thought it was very beautiful, reminded me a bit of SoCal where I grew up and Colorado. People seemed friendly and they have In-N-Out which is a plus as Florida does not...

Thanks! Dixie Springs is a nice area. We were pretty particular in what we were looking for. (specific features) We're looking forward to being able to jump in the sxs from the house and be out riding in minutes, or my son can cruise around in his little rzr or dirt bike. Or head any other direction and be in a rec area within minutes. It'll be nice.

    Way cool man! That’s awesome!

I would have to make metal fab my full time job. I’ll build whatever anyone needs built as long as it makes me a living hahaha. The one thing I have going if I moved there would be I’d be able to make a good chunk of money off my house here in SoCal and I’d be able to put around 50% down on a house there making my mortgage way cheaper than here

That’s way nice of you man. I appreciate that. But my metal fab is more welding and stuff like that. I don’t know a whole lot about Lathes and CNC mills and stuff. Assuming that’s the type of stuff he does

Man it’s all such a different language than the saxophone manufacturing & repair world I’m in ... I know he’s got mad welding skillz and fabs stuff all the time, but running those CNCs must be the main gig.

Glad to see you’re in a good position to have some options and get yourself set up right when you do make the move.

There’s a couple fab guys up north of SLC who are in the Toyota off road world and might be able to give you some insight (not sure how they’d approach talking with potential competition though). I remember one of them ranting in a FB post a few months back about folks wanting eBay-bumper prices for custom fabbed one-offs. Hopefully that’s one bad experience and not indicative of the greater Utah market.
