First Tacoma- Sport vs Off-Road?

Ohh that all makes sense now. Yah you’re spot on. The SR5 rear diff might be smaller than the OR, probably the only mechanical difference but if you’re going with an air locker, you might be able to swap out rear ends or regear while you’re in there.

 

Mine is a 2nd Gen, btw - but I will likey re-gear at the same time as the locker. When I get back to the US, I'll need a local 4x4 shop to make-friends-with.

 

you’re in the 3rd gen section haha. I have heard the 2nd gen market is tough. I sold an ‘08 TRD OR 4x4 on Craigslist, just listed it to see what would happen, truck sold in under an hour for asking price. Should’ve asked for more.

The sport and sr5 have a brake lsd that can transfer power, so if you lift a wheel on each axle, you aren't just 2wd. It's nowhere near as good a locker but it's better than nothing.

Watch at 12:30. This is a tundra but it works the same on the Tacoma. Eventually, the computer figures it out and gets the power to the wheels that need it.

In Canada, Off road = short bed

Might have considered it otherwise but I really prefer the sport suspension

 

The Off Road and Pro also have the same Computer Simulated LSD, the Locker is in addition.

I think you are right about that. Here is the side by side specs comparison, in case that helps.

 

Yes, the sport has 265/70r17 and the OR has 265/75r16 which essentially ends up being the same size

Bet you could find a willing 3rd gen owner to swap hoods with you pretty easily.

 

Even if you don't need the Offroad capability it is nice to have it...just saying

 

If you are one for creature comforts (Premium sound, leather, heated seats, auto thermostat, etc.) and were planning on specing out both the sport or OR the same way I think there is a pretty small difference if any at all in price and go with the OR for crawl, locker, and larger diff. If you were going to go bare bones sport or OR I would then consider the SR5 and mod it to hell.

 

My Sport came with 265./65R17 tires.. /sad

 

Plus depending on effort you might be able to get over $5k off that price if you haggle well. After several dealers told me to walk, I went out of state and found one that allowed me to buy an access cab MT Sport for $30,552 and they threw in the $400 storm mats and door edge protection strip things. <3

 

Offroad :

Rear locker, electronic brake booster, ATRAC/Crawl Control, 8.75 inch rear, 16 inch wheels, black plastic fender flares and front bumper, softer suspension

Sport:

Skewp, painted fender flares and front bumper, 17 inch wheels, stiffer suspension

Both can be specced with the same interior features. They are essentially the same price.

I don't think the offroad features would be of much use to you, but it would really bother me to pay the same price for essentially a hood scoop... The Sport is an overpriced appearance package. Also imo it would be silly to base the purchase off of the suspension either way. Shocks are easily replaceable wear parts and the stock ones are about as cheap as they get.

 

That is a good point. I think the OR is the direction I’m headed.

 

Yeah that makes sense. I think the OR edition is what I’ll look into unless I get a hella good deal on an SR5 or Sport.
