Was this your first fluid drain/fill or have you been doing those regularly (ie every 30k or so)? On most sealed transmissions, it's more of a larger particle strainer vs an actual filter element. Just curious why you went this far vs doing regular drain/fills since this is technically not a required service item. But neither is the fluid I guess per "lifetime" Toyota assessment.

At around 75k I started doing the fluid check procedure, which introduces 1 fresh quart in to system, every 5k miles. Fluid coming out was very very dark red, not burnt but not exactly healthy. Decided after I hit 100k I would get in there to change the filter and clean the magnets off. No science here, no facts, I just wanted to do it.
I tow a camper pretty regularly as well, I might even qualify for severe use but since toyota dosen't specify what that means, I'm not sure.

And you're right about the filter element, it looked more like a sponge than a filter, mine did have a fair amount of metal in it.

Makes sense if you have the time and knowledge to reseal the pan (not rocket science).

From experience with another slush-box, the longer you let it drip, the more fluid you'll get out. Even jacking up one end of vehicle will help get more out.

Picture of magnet and fluid (more burnt sienna than red) from another vehicle after 45k. Can't recommend more doing regular drain/fills than what's in the manual. This is coming from a 4dr sedan that lead a pretty easy life so just imagine what your fluid looks like when you're towing and driving hard. That's it for my PSA.

Good Info. My fluid looked about the same when I started doing the level check at 75k. Its looked much better when I pulled the pan at 105k. I will continue to drain and fill (fill and drain?) From here on out

When you say drain and fill, are you doing the full 12+ qts or just the quick 3-4 qts procedure? I'm wondering if it would be sufficient to do the simple 3-4 qt replacement every 15k or so (just as a random mileage example) and only do the full 12+ qt drain at 100k+, rather than never doing the 3-4 qt replacement and doing the full drain more often.

I'm only doing 1 at every 5k. I do not have any science or facts back this up, just keeping my fluid fresh since I tow

I did the filter replacement at 105k which drained about 6qts out

Best thing to do is start drain/fill early in the vehicle's life so fluid and its additive package stays fresh. If you can, let fluid drip/drain overnight and you'll end up getting more out. That is my plan having serviced two slush boxes myself with 0 issues.

Doing differential oils tomorrow and after some searching could not find an answer if it is better to change hot or cold? I would assume cold so that all of the oil has drained down and then let them drain for about an hour.

I did mine hot, just because I had to drive to my work that has a pit. I'm not sure if it matters all that much though. I'm sure it drains a little easier hot, but enough to make a difference? I doubt it

I agree with you that it doesn't make enough of a difference to matter. I am going to let them drain for a while to get out as much oil as possible. Thanks for the input!

Is there an aftermarket transmission fluid that folks use for the 3-4 quart drain/refill? I ordered the Toyota fluid from Amazon but I'm not getting any shipping info. It's been 2 weeks. The closest Toyota dealer is 1-1/2 hours away. Just not sure about mixing the Toyota stuff with some aftermarket fluid.

Better off changing all the fluid to a different brand when replacing " all " the fluid as there is far better fluid available now.
Full synthetic 2020 technology https://www.lubegard.com/products/atf/ and I wouldnt have an issue running this stuff for 50k in any application
WS fluid is semi synthetic 2003 technology .
When topping off the factory fluid from a drain and fill , use the WS fluid that came from the factory .
Its not a good idea to mix different brand of fluids .
Only when you perform a pan drop and full flush should you consider changing to a different brand

I found another source on Amazon and it appears I'll now get the fluid in about a week. Canceled the first order.
    Thanks, Tim

@Amanelot thanks for the write up! Made changing the front, rear, and transfer case fluids over the weekend a breeze. I need to Invest in a creeper, my elbows are scraped and my hips and abs are sore. Lol
