    Right!?
Dogs can sniff out diseases, bed bugs, drugs, etc.....
I am sure gold has to have a smell associated with it, either from the soil its deposited in or the gold itself.

Hmmm, he is right. As for associated smells, iron oxide and sulfide deposits definately have particular smells, so that could work...

Ah, but XRF doesn’t poop! Check this baby out, how’d you like to keep one of these in your holster while you’re detecting? Only $22K

I've even been making lists of places I can, cannot, and can possibly with permission, hunt. Been researching gold prospecting on the Llano river as well, which one of the local clubs has been doing for awhile. I didnt even know there WAS gold in Texas.

Welcome to a fun sport! I love detecting for gold, and there may be some good places in Texas that people haven’t hit yet since most people don’t think there’s gold there. Are you also in a good area for beach detecting in Texas? If so, along with watching all those great videos by Jeff Williams to help you learn how to detect for gold, you can also watch these for beach detecting hints. (I tell my wife they’re educational videos) she knows her stuff around beach detecting.

Oh, I discovered She Detector yesterday, and I was so enthralled until I heard her say "my husband". DAMMIT!!!:pout:

I would love to go beach combing, and have been putting together a list of options for it. Unfortunately my grandmother who lived in Port Lavaca (northeast of Corpus Christi) passed away several years ago and her children sold the house, so no cheap place to stay in case of bad weather. I'll figger it out, and hopefully have some options this fall.

I have a trip in the planning stages to Knob Creek in Kentucky to go see the big MG shoot, and maybe stick around the following week for the Kentucky Bourbon Festival. Any places in the Louisville/Bardstown area to do some detecting?

@Hobbs: I’m curious what coils you mostly use with your GPX 5000? Are you sticking to the 11” or have you used any others you like?

I just bought the 8” mono, looking forward to trying that one out. I guess most people prefer the 11”.

Also, what do you think about the mono 15” x 12” coil? I have one but I’m thinking of selling it, it’s just too small :pout:2725DF6B-E0D7-41EB-AD90-12C8EA9766DE.jpg

JK. I just don’t think it’s much different than the 11 inch. That’s Jim Straight with his Bismark coil. Check out his counter weight behind him!
