So new old guy here but not new to Tacomas - gen 1 up to current. All past trips were small excursions not requiring extra fuel. I am new to all these new contraptions to carry extra gas hence my reasoning for this post. Planning stages for long beach trip and mountain trip end of winter/early spring. Both will require extra fuel.

I've read about expanding fuel cans/jerry cans/rotopax etc...and worried about fumes. I'm unclear on best mounting location to avoid fumes on whatever fuel carrier I choose. Most cooking will be on or near tailgate and sleeping on bed rack tent. Concerned about storing fuel under bed rack and having fumes waft up to tent or when we're cooking. Concerned about roof storage due to blazing Texas heat for beach trips...be fine for cooler temps, I think.

Do you folks dismount and store fuel away from camp?

Yep prolly down right asinine questions. Any direction would be appreciated though so I don't blow us up!

I use rotopax on my truck when out in the desert. The tanks are not vented so if I have a big elevation or temperature change I vent them myself. Fuel for the truck is stored on left side, close to the fuel tank. Fuel for motorcycles is stored on the right. If I don't have bikes with me, then right side is water storage. Coffee making happens on tailgate with jetboil or coleman. Tanks never leave the truck. Other than when actively fueling, I've never smelt fuel around my truck..

These are what I’ve used and they are well worth the price. I’ve never vented them no matter the temp or elevation change or had a drop of fuel leak. I’ve been all over the country with the riding in the bed of my truck.

I would recommend getting the flexi-nozzle or a siphon, the carb compliant nozzles suck

If you want the safest and best way to carry fuel safely use the same fuel cans made by Scepter (Canadian Made). These cans are absolutely the best and most durable. The US Army/Military, Canadian Army/Military and NATO uses them. Scepter also makes water ones as well as diesel.
If you keep some air flow (a few inches gap you'll be safe)
The Jeep guys go crazy over these type of cans, Princess Auto in Canada sells them for like $78 CAD ...

    Stawk as FUCK!
I just ratchet strap some gas cans in the back to the bed. Just make sure you get cans with a decently long filler nozzle.

I use these metal cans I got from Menards, then ordered some smitybuilt can holders. They are just bolted together right now, Eventually I will be bolting them to the bed using the bed bolts.

Appreciate the feedback folks. Undecided on container but was more concerned about fumes and if the containers were moved away from truck at camp. We must be mobile on beach trips so removing would have been a pain but doable. And thank you for the suggestions too.

From OP’s thread title, I thought for a moment he has an obsession with Taco Bell.

Is there a mod for a larger fuel tank?

You should be fine re: fumes in storage with Scepters (my preference) or wavians.
If you're like me and always seem to splash yourself when filling the tank from the jerry, consider packing a siphon (with a bulb). Takes a little longer to transfer (~5 mins vs 2 mins/5 gal for me), but keeps fuel off the side of your truck and your shoes.
Scepters will swell a bit in high temps if not vented: not a big deal but be aware if your mount is tight.

I got a $40 Harbor Freight 10gal can in the shed for the lawn mower. It's sat outside in Oklahoma heat for months, no leaks. Just some swelling that is par for the course. I'd rather have something with a better pour spout, but otherwise perfectly functional for me.
