Why am I getting such low MPG??

79 MPH!! yeah, i'd be getting about 9mpg if I was lucky. I've really learned to slow down since my truck gained weight and wind resistance. If I run much over 70 I feel like I'm hitting every station. 65 is usually my happy medium on mileage and actually getting somewhere.

Lol. Are you fucking serious? Reading this gave me an aneurysm. Think about what you just said OP, close distance drive, smashing on the gas pedal, a prinsu rack up top creating drag? The fuck did you expect? You bought a truck, not a fucking prius. If you want better MPG, then go get a gas efficient car. You also bought the truck for the wrong reasons if you bought it for mpg. I've got ~850 miles on my 2020 Limited. Most of my milage so far has been 55-63 mph highway. The screen on my dash claims I'm getting 22 and change per gallon. I do drive conservatively... No mods. ~30psi in the 18" stock tires. Also have a tonneau cover.

I have a 2019 OR, 285,75,16 2.5”Lift, bamf sliders, decked box (full), camper shell... I was getting 11-12mpg. I did 5.29 gears and I’m getting 16-17 in town and 20 on the freeway. I live in Reno NV so it is hills everywhere.

 

79mph!!! At that speed 15.2mpg is very good! My mpg tanks after about 65mph.

 

Had the same thing happen to me on a long drive with cruise. It wasn't until after my first 14mpg tank that I realized that it would down shift on slight inclines and not up shift unless I feathered the throttle. Cruise control seems pretty useless above 70mph.

Also keep in mind not fully warming up all your fluids results in breakdown faster so you should consider this with your regular maintenance.

 

Your driving a brick then add the roof rack it’s like a parachute.

 

I'm well aware of what I'm driving, this is not my first truck. My previous tacoma was getting 19mpg city and 23mpg highway while driving the same speeds. I'm not clueless.
I was simply wondering if the prinsu would really make that much of a difference in MPG. Thank you for such a helpful answer

 

Op, this gentleman said it better than I could. Especially the very short 2 mile trips.

 

From what I have seen any roof mods or lift + big tires will hurt your mpg (which is 17-18 on a good day anyways).

 

Get around 23 mpg on average. 38 psi on stock tires, between 60-65 mph on the interstate, soft tonneau cover, and coasting to a light when you know it’s probably going to be red. Heavy foot both braking and accelerating are mpg killers. My 2 cents!

 

I get 13-15 on my 2020. Only 1.5k miles, maybe it's not broken in yet? I don't really have many accessories on there, the heaviest would be the bed mat and the trd skid plate. Hoping mine gets better eventually lol

 

Short trips like that will kill your mpgs. Your engine doesnt even have the time to reach operating temperature and its running rich trying to warm up that engine.

I just got done with a road trip. 2019 TRD sport dcsb manual with a roof rack/basket and a trimmed down air dam running stock tires at 38 psi and a tonneau cover. I drive with normal cruise control and will drop a few mph when going up hills. I've noticed the computer and actual numbers are off on my truck, I regularly have been getting .5-1.5 mpg better that what the computer tells me. I usually run my tank down to 3~ gallons left before fill up.

18.6 mpg @ 78 mph with slight headwind - 150 miles
22.7 mpg @ 62 mph with tailwind - 120 miles
20.5 mpg @ 64 mph with headwind - 140 miles
18.9 mpg @ 76 mph with no wind - 140 miles

 

Just came back from a nice drive on the highway, trip average was 10.5L/100km over about 80km
265/70/17 ATs and tuned (OVT SFOB Premium). No extra weight.
Kept the speed 100-102 kmh.

 

The super small and light single cab Toyota trucks and even 1st Gens got decent fuel economy, since 2005 Tacomas have had horrendous fuel economy comparable to full size 1990s domestic trucks. The best I ever got with my 2005 single cab was 24mpg on a 4 day cross country trip averaging about 65 mph. It's the only con I can think of when I'm randomly asked about my Toyota, thus is told every time.
