1st Gen Fuel tank replacement part list

Just replaced my fuel tank and I wanted to share the parts list to make this easier for anyone else who is wishing to do this job. My tank was leaking due to rust. I only replaced the parts that I felt needed to be replaced with this job, not all parts were replaced. Here is the list of parts replaced along with where I ordered the parts from. Below is additional parts you may also need to replace depending on the condition.
**NOTES**I highly recommend removing the box for easier access to the tank and all components. I also recommend replacing as many parts as you can since you are already doing the job. *DEFINITELY be sure replace the fuel filter with this job as well*

Sweet! My tank only holds 10 gallons due to offroad thrashing and I have been looking to do this and build a skid for it. How was the quality of that rock auto fuel tank? I cant stomach the price of OEM and finding used tacoma parts is harder than finding italian exotic car parts around here.

what part on the tank was the rust found exactly? i try to keep mine hosed off rountinely in the winter but you never know!

When my transmission blew up, the cheapest one I could find at a pick and pull was 1600.00 with 100k unknownmiles on it. A zero time rebuild from marlin crawler was 1400 shipped to my house from California. Crazy man!!!

 

Great to see this info. Previous (original) owner told me there's a lot of "stuff" (my word, not his) in the bottom of the tank and needs to be dropped & cleaned or replaced.
If possible, I'd like to install as big a tank that Toyota offered or offers. Maybe even one from a Lexus SUV if practicle. Still need to investigate possibilities.

My old fuel tank was very rusty, mainly on the top of the tank. Especially around the filler neck and tank vents.

It is over half the price of an OEM tank which is the main reason I chose this option. In fact all of the parts for the entire job weren't much more than just the cost of an OEM tank alone.
The tank comes painted with a nice gray primer style coating. I painted the tank black myself for additional protection and to match my black undercoating. The tank design is identical to the OEM tank and everything lined up an installed without any issues. So far everything is working great, no leaks or smells of gas fumes anymore!

WISCOMA... Thanks again. Went to Rockauto's website. Found the 18.5 Gal tank. Now on my "wish list" for next year.
I think I have the 16 Gal tank in my Tacoma but I can't get more than about 10.5 Gal in it, maybe a tad more.
I want as much range as I can get even if it only add 1 more day before I need to fill up.
I only do about 20 miles a day, 65% to 70% city, stop and go.

 

I do not like steel tanks does anyone make a poly/plastic tank for Tacomas?

 

Was the 18.5 gallon tank an option on these trucks from the factory?

I’ve received conflicting part numbers (from dealership parts counters and online) for the fuel tank strap. Specifically, the pinned strap underneath the rear of the tank. The number I was was given 77603-35050 doesn’t match Wiscomas number.

Anyone care to set the record straight? Application is an 04 xtra cab, 4x4, v6.

 

There are two straps for the rear, one is a bit longer, for the 18ga tank, and one is shorter, for the 16ga tank. I believe 77603-35050 is for the 18ga tank, while 77603-35040 is the 16ga tank.

OP did not purchase a strap, though. He purchased 77681-35020, which is the seat, a little rubber bit that sits on the strap and prevents metal on metal under the tank.

you are welcome. I am trying to decipher the parts needed to swap a new tank into my truck, so it was useful for me to go through the PN's and figure out what is what...

Any issues with the Spectra tank so far? Other than some reports of leaky spot welds, the only downside to these aftermarket tanks is they do not have a baffle around the sump. Any problems with fuel starvation at lower fuel, or offroad (if you partake)?

 

Spectra build a very good product, most are made in Canada and maybe USA. Quality is excellent, I have one in my Tacoma and Pontiac.

I concur on removing the box to do this job, very easy to get everything apart and back together.

 

Thanks for the vote of confidence. North American manufacturing of spectra also helps me choose between the Dorman, which is probably made in china

 

Dorman products may be good or not , Spectra is highly recommended in the old car world.

I have a 63 Pontiac Parisienne, 409 4 speed, new tank in 2016. Tacoma done around the same time, rusted out on top where rustproofing was not applied. Under the strap.

 

My Tacoma tank is rusted under the fuel sending unit gasket. The amount of rust does not allow for a good seal, and fuel splashes and seeps out when the tank is full, or bumping along off road. Also the beginning of some rust in the seam around the perimeter of the tank.
