I have a DCSB and haul an 11' kayak a lot... in the bed.
Can even stack multiples on top of each other.
Don't go through the effort to try to haul on roof when the bed is there for that.
I run straps from the hanging end of the kayak to the tailgate on each side
I run a strap across the tailgate to lock it down tight to the bed
**** it critical to also strap the end closet to the cab...as it is possible for the kayak to still teeter on the tailgate if a load shifts.

What about truck bed extender that fits in the hitch? Amazon sells them. They are different than the bed extenders that rest on top of the tailgate.

I went ahead and updated my original post, but I just put each of the 10' kayaks into the bed and strapped it to each side of it. Worked like a charm!

Might be a little late but here's a 10' Pelican fishing hunk of poop and a 12.5 WS Tsunami with no craddles on an OEM rack.

I've had my 2 12' Tsunami's on the roof for portaging trips. WORD OF WARNING: the racks aren't far off the roof.... be careful that you don't scratch the s$@# out of your roof... gonna be doing some extensive touch up work thanks to the wife.

You feel pretty confident about transporting them that way? I have the oem roof rack and just curious?

It was a little scary at first. I used extra ratchet straps, not the pull straps it came with. By using the ratchet straps I felt fine carrying them that way.

Thanks for the reply. Was just curious with the 100lbs rating.

So, after reading a few comments. I decided to try my own roof rack out. With the 100lbs rating I was hesitant. After around 200 mile round trip staycation im confident in the oem holding 2 10’ kayaks pretty well.

Thank you all for the input.

On a previous, similar size SUV, I used to stack two 10' kayaks on the OEM roof rack.

I've been wondering why there's even a concern with using the roof rack on the Tacomas.

Since I currently do not have a roof rack, I've stacked both kayaks in my long bed, sticking out, with no extension. But I do want to use the roof rack eventually, with the J holders.

It’s because the majority of the build is that hard plastic. It uses all 5 factory holes, but the majority of the body is plastic. And that is the issue, if it had a piece of metal as reeindforcment I think it would be a bit stronger. It’s the exact same design that’s on my fiancé’s Subaru Outback, I mean exact. I’m surprise that has never been brought up, but we use it all the time for the kayaks. It’s rated for a 150 compared to Toyota’s 100 though, now it’s clear if you want more on top like a tent, go with a full metal brand. For me, I don’t use my rack that much nor intend to use a prinsu or gobi to its fullest so my factory is just fine.

Definitely interested in picking up J-Bar carriers for my OEM rack (for two 10-ft. kayaks), but also feeling hesitant after reading some things on here. Looks like you've got exactly what I had in mind, so I apologize for rapid firing questions. No issues at highway speeds? In windy conditions? What J-Bars did you go with? Thank you!

They are just some cheapo Amazon ones, work just fine. But I have some bow tie downs I picked up off amazon as well to help. Overall it isn’t bad, I haven’t driven for thousands of miles with them on top, usually have a camp trailer I pull for the long run, then from the camp spot to the river I’ll slap them up. I can tell you one thing for sure with those up top is a damn sail and you can feel them there.

Thanks for the insight. They're on the lighter side for 10-footers, about 36 lbs. each, so I think I'll give 'er a shot! Here's hoping the rack doesn't rip off :fingerscrossed:
