Did they give any indication as to what was actually wrong with the other ones? Didn't they initially say the problem was the ball joints. They sure have backed off of that if they are replacing altogether.

 

No they initially said the slug just a bit tweaked likely and they would machine a spacer of some kind for the slugs. Which to me meant basically exactly what I already had done with the washers.

But they must be much worse than they thought I guess. When I called 2 weeks ago I talked to a different guy this time, Carl one of the owners. He said they they were just going to cut the end slug out and weld in new ones.

Then today I got an email from Carl after sending them one last week as I couldn't get anyone on the phone that the path of least resistance is to just make new ones. He said one of the guys in the shop is going to repair my old ones on his own time for his personal rig.

So yeah. Kind of cool. I know they have been working at like a quarter capacity too.

Either way i won't get them till next week which kind of sucks as the weekends are flying by and still haven't been camping...but oh well.

I just checked my lbjs a few days ago, and they're still seated nicely. Glad to hear solo is taking care of you though.

I'm seeing if GFC will take care of me right now.

 

It was a pretty incredible sunset. Would probably have been sitting on my ass and missed it had I not have to dick with the broken hinge, so I guess there's that.


It did happen on Friday and kinda messed up some weekend plans though. Hoping to get it sorted for this three day weekend. There's some fish in WY that need catching.

 

How is it possible that a side panel just comes off?

 

The hinge breaks.

 

Frustrating. With how easily some people's have been breaking I'm surprised how long yours lasted given how it was one of the first campers built and is in the elements all of the time. I also saw somebody in the 200's had theirs break recently. I hope it's not something that will continue into the higher numbers. Hope they can get you the replacements quick.

 

I am out of the gfc loop. Didn't realize this is an ongoing issue.

 

Keep an eye on them man. Austins got loose on him as well.


and dude that sucks. Wow. I was always curious about how that hinge material would work out. It reminded me of an old plastic coloring box hinge from elementary school and those always failed too.

A bit of a bummer for sure. I was scheduled for the PIT to get everything updated to current spec a couple months ago, but that obviously got pushed back. Just a little bit too late on that.

My camper is one of the first though, I've had it for almost exactly two years, it gets used regularly, and it's always outside with the high altitude sun/weather beating on it. Some other guys definitely had it worse than me.

Yep. I'm certainly not the first.

Who knows? There's several other companies jumping in the game right now.

At least GFC has some staying power at this point and seem to be backing their products. I would rather have that than some boutique guy that builds a few campers and then disappears.

 

You guys may have cracked core supports, coil buckets, and fender wells. But I have a crack pipe, I mean, cracked leaf.



So I ran out and bought some cheapo ubolts and I'm going to the junkyard tomorrow to pick up some replacement leafs out of whatever I find laying around. Then I can build a half ass franken pack to hold me over for a few weeks.

 

24 years of metal fatigue. I wonder what else is about to let go.

Really? Where I can see photos of that? (that would be the first issue I've heard with my plate design to date.)

I extended mine rearward and added an internal weld slot so that it uses the entire top (particularly the inward portion) of the tower for cantilever; which has been working great. This is part of the reason for 3/16" over 10ga.

I still think if you're strapped and bumped correctly, you eliminate this issue entirely.

 

That’s my thoughts about GFC as well. Although there are some problems with the campers, considering how small their business model is with the now 700-ish campers out I feel that they’re doing a pretty good job at rectifying any problems despite what some say.

 

I believe Brett is strapped and bumped correctly and has still seen cracking happen

 

I think when my TG straps started falling apart there weren't preventing a top out on a hard extension. New karteks are holding strong. Need to get some more wheeling in if I can keep other parts of my truck from breaking to see how it holds up.

 

Well gave up. Ordered a new spindle today.
