Thinking about going to look at this 2wd....

This one has been on the lot for a few months and price has dropped a couple times down from 20k

I live in MN and need something to replace my gen1 trd as it has rotted out just under 200k miles.

This one here is not 4x4 but honestly i only used my 4x4 a couple times in the 10 years i owned my gen1 when the roads were really really bad with snow. Everything else was fine in 2wd. Makes me think i dont need it as much as i thought i once did.

this looks like a nice truck. I cant help but think something is wrong with it as it is still sitting...

 

From the pics, it looks nice, but in person could be very different. My guess is: 2wd resale takes a hit up north. It's strange it's been on the lot for months, yet is plated?
I'd only buy a 2wd if I was close to the equator, but you're the one buying.

Lots of people think if the truck is 2wd it is useless. More importantly, less street cred ;-)

Data point: My brand new 2019 which is the exact clone of the truck in the ad (except I have the 2.7 and 4wd) was $25.5k (sticker was $30+k)

EDIT: In the two winters that I've owned my truck, (I'm in northern New England) it has been in 4wd about three times, mostly just to screw around.

 

yeah...i really would like the 4x4 again. I LOVE my gen1. The price of this one right now is the same price i paid for my 4x4 about 9 years ago with the same milage...and i think it was from the same dealer oddly.
Now if i wanted the 4x4 id have to pay upwards of 10 to 12K more.......which is insane.

I mean dont get me wrong...i love cars. In the end though.....the older i get, i realize its a fools game. They get old.....the rust to hell...the break down and they are garbage after about 10 - 15 years....Especially here in the cold weather arctic nightmare winters.

SO then a "cheap small truck" at $30k is still an insane price. 10 years for $30k and that doesnt include anything else.....(gas, inssurance, maintenance, etc). Basically you are paying 3000 a year just to have it sit in your driveway/garage. IF you want to actually drive it the price goes up. Of course you are going to drive it. And.....all the while the truck is losing value as it ages. The good thing about toyota is they hold their value. That is if they frame doesnt rot to hell. Then you have nothing.

Boil that away and chances are you are spening $5000 a year just to drive to work and home. Now there is a scam Nobody can escape it though....so its pretty pointless. I Have been extremely happy with my gen1. It has never let me down other than the frame is now fubar but thats what happens when the state you live in dumps battery acid on the roads to melt the ice/snow because morons cant drive the second it snows.

Sheesh....i am only in my early 40s. I am really going to be a bitter old bastard when i get older.......

Yes you are, and you're not that old. Your gen 1 is gone, and so are the days of simple small cheap pickups. let it go, life is short.

 

Even if i do put the safe-t cap kit on my frame.........it wont get me much more time before it rots out again in another spot. I cant sell the truck with massive holes in the frame or likely with the frame repair. I was thinking maybe of parting it out but thats worthless for the most part. Junking it would bring maybe $500......and thats a long shot.

Maybe someone would want it for a mud/trail truck or perhaps i could give it to my uncle to beat around the farm with. I think those are my options

 

Looks like it has diff lock which should really help. My concern in your area wouldn't be getting stuck but going up & down snowy/icy hills but you know your area best.
I'm from the south & I swore after my last prerunner with diff lock I'd never spend $ on a 2WD again. It's a real pisser when you do get in a precarious situation but I guess you know that. Of course, most precarious places can usually be avoided.

 

Buy it.

 

If it's in otherwise good shape and you can get a new frame, then buy a shitbox to drive, while you strip and replace.
To add insult to injury, all that chemical that's ruining your vehicles, is your tax dollars at work!

 

it sure is my tax dollars. You would think they would give us cold weather folks some kind of rebate or coupon since all the cars wear out way before they should but that doesnt make sense. Even if they did.....someone somewhere would wine and cry about how unfair it was........much like im doing now........or even worse......they would just get the $$ back out of you in increased taxes or at the pump or any number of ways where you dont even notice. Its all a scam

Either way...you dont have much of a choice in the matter.....a guy has to get to work.

 

It's had the "no worry" miles used up on it and its still almost 18 k. Unless you need the six cyl I would get a new or almost new way lower miles base 4 cyl SR in the 23 or 24 k range. For a extra few K you get a new truck with the warranty and one that isn't almost half way used up. imho.

 

good point. I didnt tow much at all ever with my current v6. I havent driven the 2.7 4cyl but id like to try it out. I haul light stuff.......boards and wood, riding mowers, motorcycles, etc. Nothing major

 

Also, since it's 2wd and access cab the dealers have a harder time selling them. Most folks want the terd off road dbl cab, if you look at the "how much you are paying" thread that's almost all they talk about. I know a lot has changed in a year, but in July of last year I got a V6 2wd access cab SR with SX pkg that had 1200 miles on it for 23.5 otd. I watched it on autotrader for a month, they started at 26.9 and knocked it down to 24.9 that's when I went for it and got my price. Basically the same as a new four banger but got the V6 and SX pkg as well. Still had the rest of the warranty and by being certified used it actually had a longer power train warranty on it. My son has it now down south. My wife and I were planning some trips so I decided to get a 4wd just in case. Anyway, best of luck whatever way you go.

thanks. I have been looking and watching autotrader, cargurus etc. Nobody seems to sell private any more which is weird. Prices around here are pretty high id say. I was hoping all this lockdown virus stuff would knock prices down a few steps but nope. Nothing yet.

I did notice car rental prices going up though. I have been renting cars to get back and forth to work on days when i have to go in. IT as ~$60 a day.....and now its up to almost $80. Everytime i have to go into work i lose a couple days of pay just based on the rental but i still have a job so i guess thats better than some folks.

 

From reading the pricing thread mentioned before it appears that there's a shortage of tacos right now due to the factory shutdown. Probably affects the used market as well. There should be new 4 cyl access cabs in the price range I mentioned though. Hope something breaks loose for you soon, renting sounds like a money drain.

 

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah......its a bummer...but id rather keep my job. Thats the most important thing right now.

 

MN winters are not what they used to be. 15-20 years ago, you had to have 4wd to go anywhere. But we have not had the big snow falls like we used to (like when the dome fell or halloween)

That being said, I use my 4wd a few times a year in the winter, but most of the time its to get to the sledding hill for my kids (they dont plow the parking lot)

If you dont plan to offroad, and im not even sure where you could easily go here in MN, then get the 2wd and just put a few sand bags in the bed.

 

Ya but up north, it only takes one time needing it to make you regret a 2wd. I’ll never own a 2wd up here again.
