MPG Repost - You Get Terrible MPG Because

I thought my MPG was bad because I drive 15 miles to work in the snow..uphill! Both ways!

 

It’s crazy how they basically just added a bed to the odyssey

 

1. Owns a Tundra; writes a novel discussing Tacomas
2. My current Tacoma gets exactly 2mpg's better gas mileage than my Ridgeline did.
3. Did I mention I use to own a Ridgeline?

 

my mpg is better than most.... i have a perfect drive and speed. i also get 400+ miles per tank

 

I get 18 because I always try to get past 115 on that one stretch home. If I could just do 65-70 I bet I could get 20.

Wrote it before I had the Tundra lol and it applies to all vehicles. Physics.

 

Good luck teaching people thermodynamics. There was an interesting article of how Toyota engineers improved the efficiency of the spark kernel by 7% or something and it was one of the biggest efficiency gains in the combustion process in a god-awful amount of time. Exploding air and fuel is inherently inefficient but its the best....bang...for your buck (I had to). It'll be cool to see the first massive battery powered truck, purely just to see someone hack the amperage to get 1k ft-lbs of torque and blow their axles apart. We're headed that way but not til battery technology takes another leap forward.

I appreciate the thread. Trucks are trucks. The Tacoma is fat mountain climbing donkey and while I have to admit I do spend an inordinate amount of time wondering how to get 20+ mph, I remind myself, I bought a truck cause I love trucks. My Lexus GS350 was similar weight to the Tacoma as scary as that sounds and the MPG wasn't far off either. Gravity is a real SOB and it just keeps holding us all down.

 

It's refreshing when someone understands! We did a battery torque test years ago on a Class VI Truck. At 120 psi tire pressure, we actually spun the wheels inside the tires to the point of smoking the tire bead. Tire stayed still, wheels turned at 1000 rpm. Just a bit too much initial torque...

 

Why do Tundras (allegedly) get such horrible gas mileage?

Technically it is a truck by definition, but I too mess with my friend who owns one. Caruck is what we call it.

 

Putting cilantro on a turd doesn't make it a taco.

Just because Honda and KBB call it a truck doesn't mean it is one. No separate frame, no separate cab and bed, not a truck. At best it's a unibody crossover...thing with a bed.

Sorry if this hurts Honda's feelings.

You don’t know the definition of a truck then. Like I said I make fun of them but they ARE TRUCKS.

I don't really care that I get shitty mpg(16), I just wish our fuel tanks were bigger so I could drive more than 270 miles on a tank.

 

Why is that? Are fueling stations 271 miles apart in your area?

 

My parents live 350 miles away is the main reason but stopping less around town would be nice as well.

 

I love my mpgs. Despite my attempts to get 0-60 in under 5 seconds on many occasion, frequent offroad trips and 90% in town driving, i get 17 (per the trip computer gone without reset for over 1000 miles). I'm sure I could get better, but that would require lifestyle sacrifices I'm not willing to make.

My favorite little bit on the new RidgePilotLineSportThing is the metal indent where they make it appear the bed and body are separate, even though they aren't. It's like when they cover up the meat in the taco with lots of lettuce, tomato and cheese so you don't realize how little meat you're getting...lookin at you Del Taco.

 

It's all on how it's driven. Serious. On interstate, I get right at 18 mpg. That's driving 70 or below, easy foot, smooth. Around town I get 14 mpg. Towing 8K I get 9 mpg.
With the Tacoma, I got 19 mpg interstate, 16 around town and around 9 mpg with 6K trailer. Not much difference right? Well, that's with me driving. Someone else might get much worse because of driving habits.
The Tundra is old school too. No tricks like stop start or turbo, just 5.7L of NA goodness. I think it does pretty good for what it is.

All these people who complain about mpg? Driving habits is what kills them and they are looking to blame anything except what is staring at them from the mirror.
