Our "All things Bikes and Tacos!" thread was getting a bit long, about 1,000 pages long. Born from the ideas of members, a Bike Check thread was needed.

This is all about member rides. The idea behind this would be to showcase what we are riding, so that if anyone wanted to ask questions about the gear, we could provide some impressions.

What is this bike primarily used for?
Everything, it’s surprisingly versatile. It’s a lot of bike, for sure, but it pedals so damn well I don’t really have an excuse not to take it. Other than being in shape, or doing all-day epics. It’s a bit heavier for those long days in the saddle. It is coil sprung, with Double Down tires, and a pump and tool attached… It’s surprisingly good on more mellow terrain. That said, it definitely prefers being pointed downhill. Tech-gnar, flow lines, jank, jumps, are all way more fun on this thing. It's pretty much set up for Colorado/Utah riding, whose profiles look a lot like a lopsided pyramid. Lots of rocks, lots of steep, lots of elevation, dry, loose, rowdy. I reach for this bike 90% of the time I ride. She's got over 2,000 miles on her so far, hope to double that.

Suspension setup?
I used to have this bike on a Lyrik and RS Super Deluxe, both air. I recently swapped the fork over to a Fox 36, and added a ACS3 kit from Push. Also threw on a MRP Hazard with a SLS spring. Converting the bike to coil definitely changed the way it rode, it felt more purposeful. Rough and loose stuff used to throw me around, but with coil it’s way smooth. Surprisingly the weight of the coil didn’t make much difference, other than on the scale.

Cockpit preferences?
I’m not too picky. Brake levers are at 25*, and as long the bite point is the same I’m good. Lever travel isn’t to big of a deal, pretty easy to get used to it. Bars are at 780mm, but the ends are constantly bashed from trees around here. Been thinking of bringing them down a little. Grips have always been an issue for me, and I’ve tried so many different kinds. I’ve found what works right now with the Deity Knuckledusters. I’ve just started experimenting with a higher rise in my bars, flipped my stem (6mm rise) and added 5mm under it. Seems to work well so far, I feel less stretched out.

Tires and pressures?
Maxxis Assegai DD Grip 2.5 in the front @21 psi, Aggressor DD 2.5 in the rear @25psi. Early or late season I’ll rock something with more bite in the back, like the DHRII or Highroller. I want as much grip as possible on the front, don’t care at all about rolling resistance. Truth be told, I’ve never felt a difference in terms of rolling resistance in most front tires. Also, riding the Rockies means a lot of sharp rocks. My tires are DoubleDown, front and rear, cause I’m so damn sick of flats. I rolled with Exo+ casings and CushCores for little bit, but they weigh more than the DD, and don’t offer any cut resistance. Plus, replacing tires with CushCores SUCKS. Sucks even more trailside with a slashed sidewall.

Anything custom, or specific to you?
I mean, I feel like the whole bike setup is specific to me. I do run the seat nose pointed down a bit, and I'm super picky about tire pressure. Other than that, I don’t run anything that out of the ordinary.

This is far from my first mountain bike but it is the first bike I've bought new. It was a reward after two hard years of work getting debt free on modified version of the Dave Ramsey plan. I ordered it before the bike was even officially released. In retrospect, I will probably not buy another complete bike. In the less than two years I've owned it I have replaced every part (frame included) except the seat, cranks, and fork.

I live in Charlotte but have a little place in Asheville so about half the miles I put in are in Pisgah and the way I've got the bike built up now reflects that. It still rips the Charlotte trails but Pisgah is where she comes alive.

The day I picked it up.



Wheels were the first big change, got those almost right away. My old bikes have had high engagement hubs and once you are used to that it's hard to not have them. Always wanted to try carbon wheels and We Are One has a lifetime warranty and are hand laid in Canada.



First ride on the Carbon hoops and I was believer. Also had a friend get a new bike with a Gold Fox Transfer who wanted a Black one so I swapped him.



At 5'7" the medium with a reach of 460mm was a little bit of a stretch. Took the stem from 50mm down to 32mm, also toured the I9 factory, highly recommend if you are in the area.




May 2019 Disaster struck a week before my biggest race of the year, I was washing my bike and noticed a crack in the frame. Long story but basically the first batch off the line was did not have enough glue in this particular area of the seattube.



Yeti overnighted me a warranty frame in my choice of color and the LBS had it built up and ready to ride just in time for PMBAR!




In March of 2020 I swapped the SRAM GX/XO1 drive train over to Shimano XT 12 speed. Much happier with Shimano. First ride pictured here on Lower Black. @stronghammer



The stock XT brakes were fine, but a Local guy was selling some XTR brakes so I picked those up on the cheap put the XTs on my single speed. Felt the same except the carbon levers of the XTR are super snappy which I like. Ran those for about a month but I've always wanted more power, the 2-Pots just dont stop as well and built up too much heat even with the upgraded 203/180 IceTechs. Swapped the XTR Calipers for 4-Pot Saints and damn. Now I see why so many Pros run this combo.



The stock DPX2 was a great shock but riding so often in Pisgah I wanted more. Yeti has a very linear curve, 12% on this bike, so I always dismissed the idea of a coil until Cane Creek dropped their new progressive springs this year. The inline coil comes with a weight penalty of under 250g vs the DPX2 and gives LOADS more confidence and control.

What is this bike primarily used for?
Everything. The one bike to do it all for my area. Its built on the burlier side for a V4 TB with 140mm up front and beefier tires. With a one bike stable I need a bike/build that can handle the steeper chunkier trails of WNC (Pisgah), while still being at home being pushed aggressively on more tame trails in the metro Atlanta area.

Suspension setup?
Straight outa the box. Still tweaking rebound/compression on both front and rear.

Cockpit preferences?
Other than shifter/brake lever orientation I’m not picky. I like my controls further out than some folks my size because I like my hands far out on the edge of the grips. Unfortunately this results in more pinky knuckle tree bashings than I’d care to admit.

Tires and pressures?
Again I’m not too precise as my floor pump has an analog gauge. Mid 20s front and rear.

Anything custom, or specific to you?

What is this bike primarily used for?
Everything. This is my main go-to bike for every trail network that I ride in SoCal. Mainly loose over hard pack. The suspension does extremely well on climbs, around here we have to work for our descents. I leave the suspension wide open and while seated, there is no pedal bob. There is a little bob when getting up and out of the saddle to climb a steep section, but it is very manageable. The bike also descends like a dream. Extremely capable, extremely stable, eats up every dip, hole, and bump, and rolls past like nothing is there. The only downside I have noticed about this frame is pedaling while descending. Some sections flatten out so when in a high gear and smashing on the pedals to accelerate or maintain speed, the bike bobs a ton. I need to work on rear suspension to see if I can minimize this.

Suspension setup?
I run about 90 psi in the fork, and it is amazing. The DVO is the best fork that I have used. It feels like they took the best from both air and coil and combined them together. DVO does have an Off The Top adjustment, but I haven’t touched it from pulling it out of the box.
Rear suspension was set up using SC suggested pressures. I am still dialing in the settings on it.

Cockpit preferences?
I come from a BMX background so I’m not super particular. I usually run my bars at 780-800, and brake levers are adjusted to a consistent bite point between front and rear. I keep hoses a tad long so if the bars are turned 180 forcefully in a crash, I have less chance of breaking something. Levers and shifters are also able to be moved by hand on the bars, for sale reason. I always wear gloves while riding, so I typically pick grips based on color, but not really picky about them.

Tires and pressures?
Maxxis DHF 2.5 WT in front at 22 psi and Maxxis DHRII 2.3 in rear at 26 psi. They are tubeless, and I ride in a lot of loose over hard pack in SoCal, so I like to keep my grip up, but there are often really had sections with jagged rocks and braking bumps so I try not to let my psi get too low.

Anything custom, or specific to you?
The bike is custom built by me, started with a frame. Most parts came from my previous transition scout, so I only replaced parts that I needed to replace for one reason or another. That previous Scout was non-boost, and this frame is Boost, so I had to order a new rear wheel. That explains the mismatched hubs. I ridewrapped the frame, and got custom Stikrd downtube decals. The bike was all gray/silver with some black, so I added in the blue to break it up a little.

What is this bike primarily used for?
This is my only bike, so I use it for everything. My local trails are very chunky/technical and not a ton of climbing or long descents. The large 2.6 front tire and 150mm front travel absorbs everything I've thrown at it so far.

Suspension setup?
However the bike shop set it up for me. I play with the fork compression and the shock rebound as I ride, but not an expert on how all of this affects me.

Cockpit preferences?
Still rocking the standard setup, but I relocated the right brake lever to be "inside" of the shifter levers because I have small hands. In order to keep the lever at a 1 finger position I needed it moved left to allow me to reach the shifters with my thumb.

Tires and pressures?
Mid 20s front and rear. I really like the 2.6 wide tire up front, though it arguably makes me a worse rider as far as line choice goes because I just sort of bulldoze everything sometimes.

What is this bike primarily used for?
midlevel Trail to bike park. I have a Trek Stache for XC and light trail duty, but when I need some squish in my life, the Sentinel comes out to play. 160mm up front eats the jank of the western US and the 140mm out back keeps the bike from being a pig. Super easy to pedal, but tight switchbacks can be a challenge for this trail limo. IDK maybe my technique sucks. It's looooong though.

Suspension setup?
Set it and forget it. Pretty much the base settings out of the Fox manual. I do crank the rebound on the shock down a click or two for bike park riding.

Air setting on the side of the fork works well enough for me.

Bontrager Chupacabras at 15-18PSI. great for hardpack to light dust, good on rocks, complete doodoo for anything wet, loose or dusty. Looking at Maxxis Chronicles or WTB Rangers for round 2.

Anything custom, or specific to you?
Custom bronze graphics on the frame, made special by yours truly. Painted the bottle cages to match. And of course, a Stache needs a stache!

What is this bike primarily used for?
Mostly XC riding since I’ve had it. Most of the trails I’ve ridden have been mix of rocky, rooty, and flowy XC single track. No super long descents yet.

Suspension setup?
Too stiff. I still need to work this out. Probably needs maintenance.

Cockpit preferences?
Brakes at a decent angle, levers in as close to bars as possible without feeling like I have no lever travel, setup for one index finger on the very end. Shifters and lever where ever they feel comfortable.

Tires and pressures?
Maxxis minions in 29x3.0 are amazing. So much grip in most terrain and I don’t notice the weight difference over the bontrager chupacabras. 12psi f/15psi r seems to be the best for me. I might be able to go a little lower but I think I’d start to get some squirrelly tire feelings.
