Power train warranty and rear diff question

just shy of 30k, doing most of the maint myself. The rear diff is weeping/leaking (no drips in the driveway though). I called the dealership and was told my '17 OR warranty is up, and the gasket wouldn't be covered. I assume a gasket wouldn't be covered in the 60k warranty because the gasket itself is not an internal part, but am I wrong?

Anywho, afaik the OR models were not included in the rear diff recall. How bad does this look?

 

I'd call that a weep and would not worry about it unless it gets much worse. Toyota dropped a TSB that classifies leaks and weeps / seeps. Given that, I don't think they would have done anything even if you were still under the bumper to bumper warranty.

 

Cool, thanks. I'll try and mark it or clean it off so I can keep an eye on the size. They quoted me ~$442 for both diffs, xf case, and diag fee to check the diff/gasket. I've had zero issues with the truck. Bought it was ~15k miles. No diff whine, or any of the other issues commonly posted here. I think if anything I'll just do the diag and still pan to do the fluids myself.

Everyone feel free to chime in with your input (as long as it doesn't have to do with letting this weep go will kill my gas mileage).

 

$442 for swapping fluids? That is robbery. I did the diffs, MT, and T case for about $240 including the crush washers.

I am going to make a modified weed sprayer for the next time:

I think for the rear I'll just drop the spare and fill it from the bottle. Thanks for the link, hadn't seen that post yet.

Dropping the spare is a good option. Another is that some gear lubes can be purchased in pouches.

I did it by refilling quart bottles and hand pumping it. It wasn't too bad but took forever. Just squeeze it in.

$360 is much more realistic, but I would still keep the hundy in my pocket.

 

What did you use for xfer case? The Transfer Gear Oil Lf (

08885-81080) on Amazon is $80 for a liter and the manual calls for 1.1qt. So it's just a little shy.

 

I used Ravenol, but I saw the oil analyses for it afterward. The Toyota stuff has a much bigger additive package. Since I did the 2Lo Mod and am using it pretty much daily, I will get the Toyota stuff next time unless more analyses get posted. There is a thread around here somewhere that lists all the fluids that are noted to be compatible.

On level ground, 1L was enough for me. It started dribbling out the fill hole just as the bolt was empty.


Folks have said that they can find the Toyota LF fluid for about $40?

It might be worth asking your dealer parts department how much it is there? My plan is to start searching for a deal a couple months before I need it.

In all honesty, the T case did not need touched compared to the diffs and MT. The stuff came out looking to good to recycle. It could be said that 30k is too early for the factory stuff?

JTDC. I can't get a straight number from another dealer. $449 - $520 when trying to price out both diffs and xfer case. Service manager was in and out of the office while on the phone and mentioned their preferred service. $1,000 for the front and rear diffs, xfer case and flush, MAF sensor cleaning, drive train lube, oil change, tire rotation, both air filters. Wild.

 

It's literally nothing. Find something worthwhile to fret over.

 

Parts guy confirmed the parts numbers for the gear oil and xfer case oil. With the recall, he said Toyota partnered with Redline and they have a buttload of it, and need to use it before they'd be getting the genuine Toyota part again. quoted $99 for a quart of the redline 75w85 GL-5 ($20 for a qt of it on Amazon (EDIT: $63 was a gallong of the 75w-140)) and basically the same price for the straight 75w fluid for the xfer case.

 

Whoa. I was talking about the parts dept for the T case fluid only. If not at that dealer, check another as a baseline? Then you know what to compare to online. Earlier, I was just saying that $80 is not the price that you should be paying.

The only drive train to lube is the two zerks on the front shaft.

It is up to you, but all that at home is easy.

 

I am not 100% clear what is going on there, but Redline has a straight 75w that they now say is compatible for the T case. I would like to see a VOA for it.

You don't need anything special for the diffs.

 

One thing you could CAREFULLY check is the torque spec on the diff cover bolts. I believe there was incorrect torque spec from the factory. I swear mine had the slightest dampness/staining and after re-torquing and cleaning it off it hasn't come back and that was years ago. I also filled with M1 oil.

Stuff is expensive, but not that expensive. Just buy it all from redline and do it yourself. It's so simple. Do check torque on the 3rd member bolts.

Going to order the 75w85 and get the diffs done when I get back next week and do the xfer case a little later.

 

I am a big fan of Redline for MTs. It has done very good things on three different vehicles. The T case spec is a stupid worry of mine. Did you happen to find a VOA for the RL stuff? It would be great to compare to the others.

 

If you are mechanically inclined...
When you do your rear brakes, it is easy to pull the axles, remove the drive shaft then the diff.
Clean out the rear end.
Get new axle seals and new gasket or usually RTV for the diff to rear end.
Replace with required fluids.
Not a big job at all.
