    Twas a good weekend.

    Friday: pick up BAMF goods
Saturday: visit pick and pull to see the one Tacoma they have and got lucky to grab bumper support brackets for $20
Sunday: cut and install BAMF goodness.

took all day Sunday to make the cuts and install. you need to have a degree in shipbuilding to know how to get a square line across the bedside. i think i did ok. bumper still needs to be adjusted.

the best angle to view this bumper is from under. it's a work of art, truly.

Saw a nice quicksand 3rd gen at Arco on sunrise in rancho cordova yesterday. Looked like Kings and 35s. Prinsu and a hybrid looking front bumper. Clean truck! Had black/yellow plates. Anyone here?

Great radio! I'm going to buy one when I am ready for a new one. I currently have a Yaesu FT-8800R. They do not make them anymore. The radio linked above is its replacement.

As stated above I run the Yaesu FT-8800R. I use a Larson 2m/70cm dual band antenna. I have a backrack headache rack and mounted the antenna to that. Since you have shell, you can mount an antenna on the roof of the truck or a fender mount. Personally, use a NMO connector and drill the roof. The antenna will work better that way.

It's nice to have the 70cm because the Rubicon Trail is covered by a 70cm repeater. The repeater is also linked to a repeater in Placerville so you can be on the Rubicon and talk to people in Sac area

    Some really cool shit
    Could 2020 suck any more?

Took the truck in last week, Monday, to Livermore Toyota. Regular maintenance and check transmission. Found transmission bad; bad bearing allegedly. Had to order part from east coast. Why? I don’t know. Got this text this morning:

“Hi Don, our parts department says that the transmission is on national back order. Most likely what that means it will come in another 2-3 weeks. If you want to pick up your Tacoma and drive it till the part arrives you can. Otherwise, you can leave it here till it arrives. Let me know what works for you. Thank you, John“

The transmission is dying. Why would I risk using it and having a break down somewhere. Shit. Fuck. Piss. They took a week to tell me that it would be another 2 to 3 weeks before part comes in. The only consolation is that by "part" he means a new transmission. At least I hope it's a "new" transmission, and not some remanufactured one. So, that's nice.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s a 99 percent chance it will be a factory remanufactured transmission. The part number for a brand new transmission is immediately superseded by a reman part number. The upside is the reman will have an even longer warranty than what you stated you currently have. Have faith, it sounds like you’ve got a decent dealership handling your issue.

There's a company in North Carolina or near there that remans motorcycle engines. They offer a 5yr warranty on their products. What's really cool is the cost isn't bone crushing like it could be if you were to do it yourself. It's really reasonable.

I feel like the reman done by someone who specializes in that kind of repair is a pretty good deal-so long as they are building what you need regularly.

So on the way to camp last last weekend, got stuck in some super shitty traffic trying to get out of the bay and noticed my temps were getting a little warm. It was 95ish, no clouds in the sky, sitting in traffic for an hour +, and had the AC on full blast. No real surprise my temps were getting up there. Coolant was up to ~200 but cooled back down to the 186-190 area once moving again. Tranny went up to around 210 in traffic (way higher than where I normally see it) and it continued to fluctuate a lot over the whole weekend, more than usual. Going up hills, it'd bump as high as 222 and ultimately settle once at a constant speed again.

I was guessing/hoping my temps were fluctuating so much since I just spent an hour in stop and go traffic prior to climbing in elevation. But on the way home, same thing - lots of fluctuation in temps, only transmission this time. Everything was cooling as it should though, which means there shouldn't be any problems with the actual cooling system. Checked levels and they're right where they should be. Haven't driven the 4Runner since so I can't confirm whether or not it was just the temperature but it wasn't hot out when we left camp and the tranny was already starting to warm up.

Any thoughts? Am I just being paranoid? The 4Runner hasn't been in the CA mountains with heat ever so I'm not sure if it's just something to expect or what.

FWIW, the 4Runner drove over a pass at 7800ish feet the weekend before and there were no abnormalities with the temps.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

Not saying this is neccesarily the problem. Just getting a bit of back story.

    Number of miles on transmission
How long has it been since trans fluid change
Was the temp fluctuating mostly when you were driving under 50 mph? Were you driving long stretches under 50?

Like 260k-ish. Odometer has been off for a while since I never recalibrated it after bigger tires
Fluid has 30k miles on it
Yes, most fluctuation under 50 mph. Long stretches under 50 mph too. But in going over the Altamont pass on the way back, my temps usually don't rise at all. This go around, they did. And that was with holding 70 the whole time, in my overdrive gear

I was having an issue with the higher tranny temperatures and truck shutting down while off-roading at a very low speeds after putting 35-in tires on. I ended up putting additional bigger tranny cooler and hooked up automatic sensor that kicks in right when temperature reaches 180°. Never had tranny issues like @Fernando ever again!
