I don't know if it was supposed to work. I thought I saw reference to someone else having it work. It looks like if the Alexa app is active on the Headset/Radio screen, then the button activates Alexa instead.

Mine does that too sometimes. Turning the headunit on and off fixes it.

That's how mine works. It's the stupid stock Toyota one if Alexa isn't up but Alexa if she is. You can also hold down the call button on the steering wheel and it will bring up your phones search to play music and what not. At least on my Iphone Siri comes up by holding down call.

Do I need to always need to have the app opened for Alexa to work?

Hit the apps button then hit the iheartradio or livexlive app then hit the source button.

For those of you who want to play music from spotify, apple, pandora, etc, you need to install Amazon alexa app on your phone and link those accounts to those services in order for alexa to play music from any music providers on headunit. Next time, when the product comes up or have an update with new features, research first before complaining about not working. Something like "How to play music from [name] on alexa on head unit" so you will get results on how to set it up. Here what I did:

I did research before "complaining" and linked my Spotify account. Read the reviews for the Spotify skill... It doesn't work.

Did you change to spotify as default service? You probably have Amazon music as default. The default services is located at Settings > Music & Podcasts > Default Services (this shows at the top of the page.) When you hit "Change" it will show the list of linked services. Hit a provider you want it as default.

Spotify is my default for music... I can follow directions; it just doesn't work. I can get Pandora to work just fine but pay for Spotify so that's what I use. Try it for yourself... I tried everything.

2 stars for 6k reviews... but its probably just everyone on here thats dumb and can't follow directions.

Oh well. Sorry that it doesn't work for you. Maybe they will fix for next update. I don't use Spotify which I don't have account there. I use Amazon and xm.

Amazon and Pandora work. It's something with Spotify. Shitty that the most popular one doesn't work... would have been a really great update for me if it did.

I can play Apple music on my home Alexa device, but it won't work over my tacoma HU.

Is it just me, or do I have to play with my phone every time I turn my truck on to get this working?

And then whenever I listen to a text message, the music stops completely and I have to ask for it to play again.

Yeah, that's been my experience as well. It was nice at first, but started to get very tedious after a while. I stopped using it and just connect through bluetooth. Bummer, hope they improve user experience.

Yup same here. Spending more time trying to get it work then anything. Then I was playing music through Spotify, told Alexa to play Pandora and both pandora and spotify were playing at the same time - major fail.

So, I had to play with my phone to get Alexa working. I started listening on Pandora, then I got a phone call. When the phone call ended, the music didn’t come back on, so I had to ask Alexa to play the music again. The screen told me I had to play with my phone again to get Alexa to work again.

This is totally not worth the trouble.

Go to settings on your phone then search for permissions then find Alexa in the list to enable.
