Change your own oil (and possibly void warranty) or let the Dealership do it?

I've only got just over 5,000 miles on my 2019 SR5, 4WD. I'm scheduled for my 1 year service interval (check-up, or whatever you want to call it).

When I called the Dealer to schedule the service, Ditzy Mitzy (i.e., the receptionist) I spoke to said the Dealer would do all sorts of checks, etc., and also change my oil and filter. I said I had already done that at appx. 1,500 miles and I used a new TRD filter and the original, 0W-20 TGMO. I said the truck now only has just over 5,000 miles and if anyone was going to change the oil...that someone is ME. She said if I do that, I may void the power-train warranty.

I then had a pleasant conversation with the service Manager who said the same thing. He understands my pickiness about who changes my oil. I said I do NOT want some snot-nosed, minimum wage worker kid screwing with MY motor oil and filter. He laughed and said if I do change my own oil, Toyota *may* not honor my power-train warranty IF I ever had a problem. He suggested letting them perform all work and then, of course, if there ever WAS a problem...it would be covered without question.

What are you all doing? I'm trying to decide if I let the Dealership change my oil or do it myself (again) and run the risk of Toyota ignoring my warranty if I ever had a problem down the road.

They don’t change oil at 5k, not until 10k. Nobody will touch your oil on this trip so you’re good for another 5k

That's what I thought too, but they told me they change the oil and filter at 10K miles OR 1 year from purchase, whichever comes first.

I have a commuter car I use to go to work and I just don’t drive my truck a ton of miles. I’m pretty slow at reaching the service intervals, but they still do oil at 10k intervals. They have never indicated they did anything different, even if time is considered. 1 year would make sense but I haven’t seen it done

They can not void your warranty. Carry on with your own services.

Total Bull on both there parts. There just trying to scare you into coming to see them. You will absolutely 100% with out a doubt NOT VOID YOUR WARRANTY. As long as you use the proper oil, filter and fill it up correctly your totally fine to keep doing your own service.

Don’t believe the hype. Do it yourself and keep all receipts, mileage readings, as well as log it into the Toyota owners site.

You are right, but how many threads are on here about guys screwing it up? If the dealer screws up, it's under warranty. If the owner screws up, it's his. Dealer is righ in that respect.
Snot nosed kid for the win.

Just keep your receipts with a mileage record on it, that way if some internal engine issue ever arises you can prove it had the factory recommended services performed.

you don’t have to have it serviced at Toyota to keep your warranty

Jesus Christ just change your own oil and move on with life. Or don’t, and let someone else do it every 10,000 miles. Or 2500, or 5000, or whatever other arbitrary number you’ve decided is best.

My dealer charges $90, and getting oil and a filter on my own takes nearly half that much. My independent shop is only $40.

May, or might are referred to as weasel words. The words after them have no meaning.

    Check it.
    This will void your warranty.

He already changed his own oil once and his truck didnt blow up. Also theres nothing like DIY, nobody will care about your things or do as good of a job as you would do yourself. Pride of ownership etc and knowing it was done 100% correct. For me personally that's the owner for the win .

    I work at a dealer.

Unless the failure can be linked to you failing to change oil or failure to do it properly, you’re good.

if a valve is bent, and your oil looks burnt and is tested to be 30k miles old and the wrong weight then you’re screwed.

Dealer just wants you to do the oil change there because Toyota pays the dealer to do it with the Toyota care for 2 years. You get a free oil change and Toyota gets billed 275$ for it.
