Seat Belt Stitching Broke

So this is something new... i have had my rear seats down for a couple months while hauling stuff in the cab. I folded the seats back up today and found the rear passenger seat belt is broken at the stitches. Stitches look like they sheared right through. hasn't been used in months:


There seems to be some white rust around the floor bracket, but i can't imagine that contributing to this.



I'm going to talk to the dealer, but has anyone seen this before?

 

White rust?

 

Carry any sort of corrosive liquids back there? Say toilet bowl cleaner or draino type stuff.

I'm pretty sure seat belts have a lifetime warranty. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong. But the dealer should take care of this for you.

I usually dont say this, but take it back to the dealer and have them put a new one in there. I can only imagine it somehow unraveled when it was under tension. Were you able to find the threads that used to be the stitching?

 

If that bracket is galvanized steel i'm thinking that's what the corrosion would look like. Not sure, mostly concerned the seat belt stitching is no more.

Might have had acetone but i tried to keep all of that in the truck bed. Seats, carpet, and belt itself look good.

There's certainly a chance something got stuck on the top of the belt while in transit, but not more weight than a person.

 

Shut up Steve, he's going to be rich because he's the only person on earth who has white rust.

 

If it was acetone it could have done it. Many times the sticking g thread is a different material than seatbelts or seats. Looks like something just dissolved it. Especially with the corrosion on the bolts. Could have been another chemical as well. If you find out what it was let me know. Seems like an awesome bar trick. Sorry I don’t know why your clothes just fell off

 

Yeah gonna try to get a new one, i wouldn't want to just restitch it. Looks like the stitching is still on the outside face of the belt

 

That's a big dang deal. Definitely document that with pictures. That is safety recall territory. Imagine if that thing was on the last few threads in an accident. I would check all the other belts as well.

 

White rust is the correct term for the product of oxidation on galvanized metal. The coating is a zinc base and turns white when it corrodes.

 

The term rust is specific to iron oxide, which is red, as well as the origin of the word is "red".

We have heavy rental equipment. The Flux that is used at aluminum remelt causes that corrosion all over the valve blocks and hose ends.
We call it white rust as well.

 

That does look like a chemical spill that disolved the threads.
