Thud in 1st gear

Hello everyone!

My truck has 105k with a manual trans. But i noticed recently a thud just as i take off in 1st gear. Also when i turn sharp i hear a loud squeak from the rear. Any help is apprecated, thanks

 

Does the thud happen on acceleration or after you take your foot off the brake? Come to a stop next time, take your foot of the brake and just roll forward, if it still thuds, then it may be axle wrap caused by either weak leaf springs or the yoke on the driveshaft not having been greased in a while.

If it happens on acceleration, then it could be a number of causes.. would need to locate the sound first. As for the squeak, you sure it's from the rear? It can be hard to pinpoint from the cab.. I've had noises I were sure were coming from the rear when it was coming from up front.. heh

 

Howdy. Common issue. Likely two factors:

1. Your drive shaft slip yoke needs to be greased. Find the zerk, give it a few shots of grease.
2. Axle wrap, common to our trucks because of weak stock leaf springs and the axle-over-spring setup.

Lots of discussion on this site about both. Try the grease and see if that helps.

 

The thud happens when i accelerate, just as im about 90% out on the clutch feathering the gas.

 

Could be the drive shaft, or axle wrap still. If you can jack up the rear of the truck, block it to get the tires off the ground then see if it still thuds when you accelerate, it can help to diagnose. If the thud goes away then it's something to do with the truck being "loaded".. the suspension.. I'd say it'd be the leaf springs being weak and causing the axle to twist (wrap). If it doesn't go away, have someone see if they can locate the noise for you. Just be careful.. make sure the truck is well secured... I've had a vehicle come off the jackstands.. that's a not so fun ride when you're not expecting it.

 

How did you get the poo smell off the driver seat?

 

No pics of that incident, I was 16 at the time and my sister decided she wanted to lean on the damn car while it was jacked up and we (me and my father) were trying to figure out wtf was up with this noise we kept hearing in reverse. FWD car + idiot sister +scared ass teenager = hilarity for everyone but the poor kid behind the wheel.

As for the smell... never did get rid of it totally. :lol:

 

Hey, I had the same exact problem, word for word, detail for detail. I used a grease gun in every port, and after a few days of driving, it fixed it right up.

I went out smashing in my truck the past couple of days, and its doing it again, so going to do the same thing with the grease gun.

Just remember to give it a few days to work itself in.

 

Also, even though you think its coming from the rear, I'd put money on it that its your belts. Sharp turn will cause the belts to sqeak/squeal if they are worn, streched, or wet. Again, had the same problem, and new belts fixed it.

 

Thanks for the informative help guys! Ill pick up a grease gun this weekend and whack it to er. How many grease nipples are there? Any specific grease i should use?

Look for drivetrain at the bottom of the 1st post.

All the drive shaft yokes and the double-cardan joint take molybdenum disulfide NLGI 2, and the U-joints (spiders) take lithium disulfide NLGI 2, I think. It's in the FSM. It should also be in the back of your owner's manual.

 

There's a lot of grease fittings on the drive shaft, especially the double cabs because of the two-piece drive shaft.

And as for the slip yoke.. mine ate nearly a whole tube of grease.. lesson learned, don't trust Jiffy Lube when they say they've greased shit. lol
