Life long Honda guy looking to make the jump to a new Tacoma

Hey guys! New to the forum. As the title states, have been a Honda guy my whole life. Owned everything from Preludes, Integras, Accords, CR-V, Odyssey (the wife), and currently my wife’s old 2013 Pilot. Its a great SUV, only has 67k easy miles on it, and I really planned on running it to the ground. But as a homeowner and outdoorsman, always wanted the convenience of owning a pickup truck. I don’t need (or really want) a full size pickup. There are a bunch of domestic options for small trucks, but of course I’m partial to Japanese manufacturers, and like the reputation of Toyota’s reliability.

In comes the Tacoma. My plan is to buy one new, and hopefully hold onto it for awhile. I see old Tacomas on the road all the time, and truly hope to keep mine for a long time! Is it realistic to expect 200K+ miles and/or 20+ years on the newer ones, with regular maintenance? I won’t be doing any off-roading (the occasional gravel road at best), minor loads (Home Depot runs, mulch, etc).

I love the look of the TRD Sport, and will most likely put a leveling kit and rear block to put some bigger tires on it. Looking forward to making the plunge and learning more from this forum!

@Vtecluder617 - I've been a Honda guy for a while, too (bought an '05 Pilot new, getting ready to pass it down to my son, had a CR-V and a Civic). With the Pilot moving along, I needed a new ride. I've never had a truck before and the Ridgeline is hideous but so far (about 4 months), the Tacoma has been great.

I don't think you'll regret jumping ship to Toyota. Just don't feel any pressure to mod yours just because everyone else is and live vicariously through their posts. With your money still in your pocket.

 

Buying a Tundra a keeping it stock. Would be much more useful at home depot. Sounds like you want a Tacoma so get a Tacoma.

OP, it’s going to be like the Honda. Simple, reliable, and purpose built without too much distraction and schizophrenia from trying to be all things for all people.

A cared for and not abused Tacoma that doesn’t make it 200k miles is going to be a bit of an anomaly. Sure, it can happen, but the bulk make it there easy.

My FJ went 190k in 10 years and I replaced the battery twice (Texas heat) and one alternator at 135k. Everything else was just regular maintenance. I’m sure there are tons of other anecdotal stories with the Tacoma.

Dive in, the water’s just fine.

 

Yeah I’ll always be partial to Honda sedans, and even SUVs. But the Ridgeline is a joke

 

There's a few rando's floating around here with high mileage 3rd gens but on a grander scale it's technically hard to say how long they should last since they've only been out for 5 years now. That being said they are very similar to the 2g's and the motor has been used in several other incarnations for a while now from what I understand. Also, it's a Toyota, they have their reputation for a reason. There's a few 2g trolls that will probably show up here sooner or later just don't listen to them. Also X2 on the Ridgeline jokes. In fact just buy a Ridgeline instead.

Weve been honda guys for a while. A 2016 Tacoma was our first toyota. Liked it for the same reasons you had. Great to look at, purposeful, and simple. The community and aftermarket support is an added plus.

I live in both worlds, have had nothing but Accords for cars since 2004, most reliable vehicles I’ve ever owned. Bought a Tacoma for the same reason, reliability.

Welcome OP!!! Read around here for a couple weeks so you can get the “scary” stories and dive in. It seems the 2020’s are well sorted out from what I understand.

Welcome!!!I got myself a 2020 TRD Sport and it has been great so far. You can't go wrong. The only issue is the 3.5 is a little underpowered but it's fine. I think Toyota kind of designed it this way for reliability. I just don't trust turbo charged engines in the long run (new Ford Ranger). There is the OVtune which can help the power if need be.
