    Yes, yes it was.

It’s amazing how accurate they are.

That’s what we call a career limiting move. I wonder how/if insurance would cover that. They do acquire insurance for the launch phase and oftentimes companies are required to have insurance to cover GFE... Not sure if that applies here or not.

Speaking of major FUBARs, anyone know what happened to the folks responsible for the bad grind and polish on the Hubble primary mirror? Were they on the hook for the repair cost?

Looks like it was a shared cost.. Probably meaning mistakes were made both on the contractor and oversight sides. Contractor got off easy IMHO. They could have been hit with fraud.

What the fuck were they thinking?

Looks like they never fixed the broken mirror. They adjusted everything else. That kind of makes sense because it was probably impractical. Looks like the company that did the wrong still exists but is no longer involved in space optics. So not only career limiting but company limiting.

Also looks like the Hubble’s orbit is expected to decay between 2030-2040. That’s one giant hunk of space junk with no real way to service it anymore without a shuttle.

I haven’t followed it closely but there’s been talk of handing Hubble over to private interests.

As for future servicing, I think Starship will be operational by 2030 so it probably won’t be an issue..
