3rd Gen V6 Loud Ticking Noise (not Vac Pump T-SB-0316-17!) Actual Issue TBD

I doubt you will run into that I know your freaking out . I would . Don’t drive it except to the dealer . If they try to pass the buck have them drive a new one next to it and compare. Simple . You shouldn’t get any gruff .

i’ll add that this isn’t consistent. only when the motor has been running a while and then i’m going slow at low RPMs and or idling.

 

Sounds like oil pressure to me now . Very likely. Don’t forget to let us know the outcome please .

oh wow! That sounds bad. Increase with revs? If they try to say that’s injectors, I would get a second opinion or have them pull another truck on the lot up next to yours

doesn’t increase with revs. doesn’t seem related to any driver input. only happens or i can only hear it at low rpms/ at idle but not every time under those conditions. just sort of random.

 

thanks been reading on TW for a while now. searched high and low and haven’t found any video or audio of a 3rd gen making this same noise. i know the injector noise people speak of but this can’t be it. also have two family members with 3rd gens that have never heard this noise.

 

not kind of sounds like a sticky valve. That’s my best guess. If they say it’s an injector that’s is one PISSED off injector lol

 

Sounds like the hydraulic valve lash adjustment is off one one of the cylinders.

It sounds like a sewing machine sometimes, which is normal. OPs engine sounds pretty bad though.

There's a pressure light too. OP, might not be a light depending on where the issue is, on the "oil pressure path". Before or after the sensor.

 

If the ticking does not increase with rpms as you stated then it could be the PCV or whatever they use in the Taco. When at idle or low rpms there isn’t enough vacuum in the intake to keep the valve open so it cycles and makes the clicking sound. I’ve had that happen to me in an OHV engine (69 Mach 1)....long shot, but wanted to put my bet in on this.

 

For some reasons those drive thru lines kinda amplify the sounds, not sure if it’s the 90 degree curb or being right next to a wall echoing it back to you. When you pulled thru to the parking lot, was it still super loud?

 

yeah. you’re right but that’s exactly what it sounds like no matter the location. walls around or not.
