Wheel size importance

Hi there,

I've been looking at getting some SCS Ray 10s (even though they'll probably be forever out of stock). I'm aiming for BFG KO2s most likely in a 285/75/r16 size.

When looking at the SCS website, I've noticed they have a ton of different sizes, bolt patterns, etc.

I'm very new to this so I was hoping someone would be able to explain to me the differences in these and how they're going to affect a tire.

I assume since I would be getting a r16 tire, that I'd want the 16 x 8 size wheel. Is it just that simple? What if I chose the 17 x 8.5 wheel, would I then need an r17?

Not only for great deals on the rims you decide on, but for a bit of reference on what has worked for others.

You’ll see other information on the rims like backspacing and offset, these are important as well. You don’t need to go through all the pages (though there are worse ways to spend an hour) to find examples that you like and see details of their set up.

Stay away from scs wheels. They don’t balance properly. Made in Thailand, don’t believe the hype, quality just isn’t there.

 

Do you know of any look-a-likes? My main reason for getting them was aesthetics.

 

Don’t listen to this guy. Thousands of people run SCS without any issues.

it’s like with every product and business. The low number of people with bad experiences make the largest fuss.

Balancing is not solely on the rim either, tires play a role. If you like the SCS wheels go for them, as @QuicksandTaco said there are thousands of happy folks rolling them right now, and my set up balanced just fine, with 37s..

 

I'm interested to hear what brand he suggests.

Yep. I've heard a lot about people struggling with getting tires balanced. Not so much wheels.

 

Yea I make a “fuss” because I spent $1300 bucks on a set of wheels that don’t balance.... I have paperwork from 5 different discounts tires stating that the 2 of 4 wheels had balancing issues with and without tires. I was running the stock tires and had major vibration, once the factory wheels were put back on vibration gone. Scs customers service never honored their word to help me out. I won’t stop my “fuss” because this company doesn’t deserve business. I’ve talked 4 people in my off-road group out of purchasing from scs from the documentation I have.....ok my rant is done lol

 

Also the wheel is slightly wider on the 17. 8 vs 8.5. Depending on your application/requirements that may be to your advantage. Also note that the weight of the entire set up will be different based on what you choose. Also how it fits in the wheel well will be different. Wheel size is not a decision to take lightly or make quickly. Much more than aesthetics alone.

 

17 inch wheels will have slightly better on road manners, 16 inch will have slightly better off road manners.

 

The top reason, IMO, to go to larger wheel size, is to increase room for a larger braking system.

 

There are a lot more tire options in the 17" wheel size also.

 

Man, I love this forum. So, just to be clear, your one bad experience offsets the hundreds of people on here who have had no issues with SCS and your word should sway potential buyers from not purchasing? Ok, I think I got it!

 

I have this same problem. Got some Falkens on original TRD pro wheels and I bought SCS rays 10. I had the same tires mounted on the SCS wheels and vibrations above 60 mph. Returned to rebalance 2 weeks later and still vibs. I followed up with alignment and vibs didn’t go away. Another balance and alignment and the vibrations are still here at 60+ mph. I’ve never seen so much weight placed on a wheel
