Reusing an auto transmission filter?

    Have about 50k miles on the Taco and starting to feel the dreaded lag/slipping from the auto transmission. So, I went to Toyota to get a new filter and the rep asked why I needed it because the dealership just removes, cleans the screens and replaces it. Am I missing something here?

    Any thoughts on this?

    I thought the "filter" was a sheet metal assembly with internal screens. I would think if you go through the trouble to get to the thing, you would replace and not clean and reuse.

    Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.

    There's no need to replace it if it isn't damaged. It's kind of like those washable/oil intake filters. However, it's not designed to "filter" like a paper/cloth filter. It's designed to catch big stuff and that's it. It's should be called a strainer IMHO.

    I am only going down this road after reading all of the inputs on TW about people flushing transmissions and not fixing the slipping issues until they replaced the filter. Agreed on the strainer concept, but who knows how big the crap is floating around in there...
