3rd Gen Poll: Rear End Noise howling when feathering throttle

Loud enough for them to change the diff.

 

As far as that goes i think just about everyone i know that had a chevy around 2015 had the chevy shake and still haven't got it resolved. I remember one owner saying they have a lawsuit against gm.

 

I picked up my truck last night and the dealer installed a new diff. The noise from the diff. has been reduced a dramatic (Oh Wow!) amount. Is the whine completely gone? No. But it's very tolerable as for this time in the cosmos. Hopefully it does not get progressively louder with mileage. I did check and verify gear lube levels and it appears full. Only time will tell.
Dealer service guy informed me that the only reason toyo allowed them to replace is because of extremely low lube levels when purchased. He further informed me (very politely) that toyo rep says "this "whine" is a characteristic of this model of tacoma". Really?? That fact should be proudly displayed on the window sticker before purchase. Sounds to me like toyo is just performing a thorough "hand washing" on this issue.
On a personal note, My wifes MB has a slight "gear whine", but I have to listen for it. Which now ever auto I ride in, I'll be listening for it. I'm ruined. But at least what I have now isn't a brain stabbing , nauseating, embarrassing whine. It is still there, But faint. Keeping fingers crossed.

 

Since it's a feature not a bug, you should have asked him which 2021 models it comes standard on.

I did. Was a lot of work with little to no result.

 

I hear it. It’s quiet but i hear it. Sounds exactly like mine. Hasn’t gotten any louder or worse. My opinion I rather have that, then potentially getting a different diff that could be worse.

Here is what Toyota had to say about mine...plus what they had to say about my driveline vibes. They even lied about rotating my tires too. Guess I'll do it myself.

 

Well that's extremely frustrating... They could've at least rotated your tires.

 

Has anyone figured out if a different weight oil solves this issue with the rear diff?

 

From other people's experiences, unfortunately no.

 

After having the rear diff changed out a few weeks ago, my whine (so far) has been reduced in volume. I have put 500 miles since the change and the offending noise is still present, but I haven't noticed any changes since the replacement. The speed range of 50-60 mph is still the magic speed for the infamous whining as with the previous diff.
The problem I have now is that I can't "unhear" it. Although it isn't nearly as loud as before, I still hear it and it's mildly irritating, but tolerable.
In reading previous posts, some have reported lifts solving the whining issue, So now I'm considering a small 1.5 +- lift to change up things at the back end.
I don't do any major offroad, only gravel and mildly sandy road base stuff (washouts etc.) and some steep climbs. I am considering Bil 5100's and AAL. Asking those that may know, can this approach positively effect the infamous whine? It will also give the needed push/excuse to spend the money!!

 

You could trade it in for an ac sr5. Just met another guy with a 2018 ac sr5 at the pumps here. We got to talking, he asked how i liked my 2020. Said he loves his...asked him if any noise problems...looked back at me like what do you mean. Said their suppose to howl. I think he thought i was smoking something, but seriously said its quiet except for some wind noise like most other vehicles.

 

There are some AC guys on here with the howl. SR5’s still have the howl even with the different rear diff. Ask me how I know...

 

OK, so, short of trading in my truck, that I really like (except for the tranny gear hunting and whine) will a lift make a change in the howler monkey voice of the diff.
If I decide to trade my tacoma, I'm not so sure a toyota will be on the menu. Their customer service has soured me.

 

I came to this same conclusion (after decades of Taco ownership) and sold mine. Honestly, just slap some mud tires on it if you want to keep it. Otherwise, if that noise bothers you like it did me, it is really hard to tolerate because you cannot unhear it. Best of luck to you.

 

The Real Moon dog, I thank you for your candid explanation of the rear diff whine problem, its obviously an engineering defect, I don't want to get involved in a pissing contest with Toyota over this whine in a new Tacoma its obviously not a tolerable defect at all, so I am staying out of the Tacoma business period, had a long line of them in the past. Looking to buy soon. Maybe the new 2021 Frontier will be something worth buying. Dana 44's, so doubt it will have a diff whine. The new engine seems to have lots of HP and very free revving to 7 grand or so. New 3.8L engine and new 9 spd auto makes me a bit leery first of the first yr model. Will have to see what else comes along in the near future.

 

Seems like Toyota is winning. The vibe here is starting to have a defeated feel and I know I’ve given up. Looking at the new Bronco if this whine isn’t solved in the near future. Seems like one of us would have found a way by now to at least tone it down. I’ve owned Tacomas since 2000. Such a shame that a truck with its legacy has come to this.
