WHEN TO CHANGE MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID

I had to gravity fill my transmission the first time when the POS plastic pump I had shit the bed after 1/2 a quart

 

Reviving this thread because I just went to the local dealer and their system says to use gl5 in my manual transmission and transfer case. You guys claim it eats brass syncros. Think I'm going to look for redline.

 

Redline in my transmission shifted like shit, hard to shift when cold and always felt like i was dealing with more resistance getting in into gear, Do not recommend!!!!

75w-90 synthetic in the front diff, transfer-case and transmission and its perfect.

Going to upgrade my rear diff to 75w-140 soon too.

I keep a detailed log of any and all maintenance I do to the truck down to the mileage and date and what was done.

 

anyone tell me the torque settings for the transfer case bolts? I can't seem to find it in my manuals. Also for the transmission fluid case too.

So what should I buy for my manual 97 5 speed gear oil wise? Not really sure and they only have gl-5 as I can see at my local oreillys

The GL rating and viscosity are more important than the brand.

So redline mt90 then? It gets quite cold where I live so maybe not?

 

Ok, this is my own observation on multiple third gen 4runner and first gen Tacoma. All with 3.4l V6 some manual and some 5speed transmission.

the only oil in the drive train that need change regularly is the rear diff.

I usually buy my vehicles right around 100k miles or lower. Every time I drain the transfer case, transmission and front diff, the fluids in those three are still clear enough to see thru. The one in the rear diff is always black. And no matter what oil I use, the 5speed is always a pita to get in first gear.

 

Have you changed your shift bushings? I got them from MarlinCrawler.com. Pretty easy.

The color of oil isn't the only indicator. Viscosity can be changing (this is due to shearing) even if it still looks honey colored.

Since the drivetrain doesn't get exposed to combustion and mostly shouldn't be running hot enough to actually burn the oil it might not ever get dark. The rear diff probably is the worst for being exposed to dirt and heat. Especially stock since they rarely have extended breathers. My truck's front diff and transfer have breathers in the engine bay so they won't suck in as much dust or water.

My rear diff (like yours) and transfer case are the two that turn darkest in my truck. My transmission and front diff like yours don't usually get too dark.

And even dirty looking oil doesn't necessarily indicate it's bad. The lubricants we use now have detergents that intentionally hold contamination in suspension, which is why it looks dark but it might still be fine. The best way is to test the oil to know but this isn't really practical to do for all 4 major components every so many miles (say every 10k) to get it exactly right so it's just easiest to follow the schedule Toyota recommends.
