My top supervisor is big into the whole "you gotta be in the office so I can see you" but once this pandemic hit and HQ sent down orders for max telework he has no power lol I get to work from home as much as I want now. When I travel I take my own car and get paid mileage and fuel, and I get to workout whenever I want, it's pretty sweet. I get more done at home than I do sitting in the office pretending to do shit lol My job is nice since I'm kinda my own boss, as long as I get my work done no one cares what I do.

That’s how my job (and my last job) is. As long as you get your work done nobody gives a shit how you do it but for some reason some of the managers want you in the office to “promote teamwork” but all the team does is sit around and bitch about how they’d rather be at home. When I was going in, I’d be in from 8(ish) to 4(ish) and spend most of my time walking around the building, eating, sitting on the toilet, or playing on my phone. 100% more productive at home doing things on my terms. I’m really hoping the company puts out a telework mandate post pandemic after they see how much of a cost savings it is to the company

I always have something in the background. In the office it's headphones and music or Youtube podcasts. At home it's a DVD if I'm alone or perhaps a metal concert. Cleaning the garage I found several boxes of VHS stuff so figuring out what it all is and what to keep/dump.

I have been doing one day per month for the past 2 years, and it worked out b/c I could schedule stuff when someone had to be home on that day. Been home since early March and we were told early Sept but recently my building (which was having a construction project) was told January at least.

Hate that kind of boss..my company is pretty progressive with it but I worked for a leader who wouldn't allow it, and the 3-4 that did only could b/c they were home before she came to the team. Randomly they were all fuckoffs so the rest of the team resented carrying them.

A few years ago my unit got software that tells them what I am doing all day, not keystrokes but what sites I'm not and if it's work or not..or if I leave my desk for 3 minutes. Pisses me the fuck off. We had a lot more freedom prior and a handful abused it; and, like most other places, instead of holding them accountable they punish us all. They had to have known who it was too b/c you see the same few leave their desk hourly for 15 minutes to go smoke or just shoot the shit.

We've been told too when the buildings reopen it's going to be staggered, like the person next to me and I will never be in or out on the same day of the week. No clue how long that will last.

Lol that wasn't the case at that job. She was a terrible manager and we didn't get along at all. The company had an on-site gym but she would scoff at the idea of using it during your lunch break instead of joining a team lunch (on your own dime) or think the idea of working less hours during the normal 9-5 because you support an international account and had an 11pm-1am meeting the night before or later that night was not acceptable. It was a bad fit. I'm not mad though. By being 'let go' during a company wide workforce reduction I received 3 months severance after a 2 month job search period. Basically from the date of notification (July 30th) through the end of Sept. I had 0 responsibilities and could apply for internal or external jobs to try to stay on board or find my next job while being paid my normal salary with full benefits. Then at the end of Sept. the 3 months severance was paid out so Oct-Dec were taken care of and I interviewed and received my current job offer in November and began working in Dec. so I pocketed a month worth of extra pay and essentially had a 4 month PTO stint :D

I could maybe see if it one abused the lunch time allotted or came back all sweaty etc..maybe. But the team lunch unpaid is a little bit much. I'll guess you were salaried by the amount of hours you mentioned, plus with in a sense working split shift that sucks. Basically no ability to go out at night if you want to for a concert or a pub. I pulled split shift in college but that was not salaried plus I had plenty of things to do in the middle of the 2.

All in all though yeah it seems to have worked out well for you..and thank goodness it didn't happen this year, yikes. I'd not want to be job hunting presently. I had actually put in a couple of applications externally, something I never thought I would do. Maybe the timing of this all is a sign, who knows..at least I'll get more time in for my pension.

What do you all do that can be done from home? I’m a trade worker so I have to physically be at work but what kind of work do you really do all day at home? Look up shit? Email peoples? Read shit and type it onto other shit? Sell nudes?

Finance. Nothing but spreadsheets. Anytime I’m working I have 5-6 excel files open on a few monitors and I’m just crunching numbers and analyzing data. It’s grunt work but it pays well and is flexible so I’m good with it for now

That’s dope. I hear good and bad things about working from home. Some people hate it cause “it feels like you never leave work” and some love it like yall do. Would be cool to try it one day.

My brother works for State Farm and hes been told 2021 for a likely return as well. If things even ever go back to normal.

The state is working on our permanent telework policy. I work with mostly lawyers in the Attorney Generals office which is in a different location and with private insurance companies. So no need to need to physically be in a building to work since no one is onsite anyways
Id like a hybrid schedule. I like home but I also like leaving home some days.

I basically manage our contractors work and then manage investigations, do legal and policy research and write policy.

All computer work and talking to people.

All my communication is through e-mail with an occasional Zoom call. I absolutely hate phone calls and video calls so I try to avoid them at all costs. I won't hesitate to ignore a phone call and follow up with an e-mail or IM a few minutes later like 'sorry I missed your call, how can I help?' or listen to a VM and reply with an e-mail answer. It's a generation thing. A lot of the older people I work with insist on 'jumping on a quick call' instead of talking over text

The main part of my job is on location oversight and inspection so I still travel for that. However, documenting, accepting product, and setting up inspections can all be done at home.

I like video chat with my team. If we need to brainstorm or solve an issue I want to talk not email.
Also all of my emails are discoverable if there is a potential legal case so sometimes if we want certain conversations to be off the record we video/tele chat ;)

Public Policy - Drafting of Legislation and Regulations, answering questions from the public, providing policy advice to gov't, etc. It is a little easier being in an office at times, as quick problem solving or clarifying conversations can happen without too much fuss, but essentially I could do this job from almost anywhere provided I'm able to work during normal working hours.

Well, oddly enough my Baccalaureate degrees are in English and Education while my Masters is in Sociology of Education. I used to be a HS teacher...lol...but I was able to get in when I moved across the country as I had some experience in policy at my University (Senate, etc) and from there it was really just on the job learning. Provided you have analytical skills, some numeracy, and can write, public policy is likely a good fit. How you get those skills doesn't matter provided you can demonstrate them. I work for my Provincial Government (like your state government) and have done some pretty interesting things along the last 11 years...

For direct policy related education, here we have a MPA or Masters in Public Administration, which is popular, but when I hire, I look for skills not paper.

    Nice.
My Bachelors is in Psych/Neuro Pre Med but I have two MPHs (Masters of Public Health) one in Health Policy and one in Environmental Science. So our US equivilent to that.

I’ve worked in health law (med malpractice and mass litigation) for about 6 years. I work for the state in medicaid fraud now.

I want to get more into public health policy than I am I just enjoy catching bad guys too :spy:
I still get to be part of a policy team on projects so best of both worlds.

I really want to get my JD but all my attorney friends are telling me not to.

I was in a assistant teaching program to get most of my grad school paid for so going back to teaching later on is a goal of mine as well. Gotta have the letters behind the name to do it. But I love school so OK by me.

I’m sick and tired of the summer heat and the fact our country doesn’t have a single payer healthcare system so maybe I just need to pack up and come live up by you.
