Well as the title suggests I’m looking for new fly rod. I left my Redington Classic trout out and the puppy decided it was his new toy. I was wondering what you would guys are using or would recommend. Looking for a six weight, mainly for streamers and big terrestrials. Looking to spend 200-300 but wouldn’t take much to convince me to spend more, So what’s your favorite rod?

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Hmmm, My experience is as follows (it's limited mind you):

7' 5w Orvis Clearwater Fun rod I like for smaller streams. $189 (rod only)
9'6" 5wt St. Corix Rio Santos This was my go to until I got the Recon. It's a great rod that's not expensive. I think I paid $230 (came with a real and case)
    8'6" 5wt Orvis ??? It's an older 2 piece that I haven't used yet. I bought it cheap from a neighbor.
10' 4wt Orvis Recon My go to rod right now. I love the way it slings line. I can get half of the line out slinging dries and it lays them down perfect. $500 (rod only - was a gift)
    8'? St. Croix Mojo Bass

Like I said, most of my experience is with Orvis so take it for what it's worth but they have never given me a reason to try another manufacturer.

do you feel like you have more accuracy with the 10’ vs 8’6”? I looked into TFO and they have a 10’ six weight I was looking at.

Most of my fly rods are Sage and Winston. Are you using it on lakes, large rivers or little brushy feeder streams? Small feeder streams I love my light 6’ 3wt Winston ibis. For lakes on a float tube it’s a stiff 10’ 6wt over lined with 7wt line. For larger rivers that I hike in it’s a 4 piece 5wt Sage. I have 1 2 3 sink and floating spools for my 5wt and 6wt rods.

my only experience is with a TFO 9’ 8wt, bought from bass pro 10 years ago, the warranty is worth the price tag along, $35 bucks and they’ll repair any damaged sections (for when you close the truck door on the rod) :annoyed:

I run aSage 5wt and couldn't be happier with it. There's also a guy from Orem Ut that makes beautiful fast action fiberglass rods in the $300 price range. I have a 4wt version of one of his rods. Snapped the rod tip off a couple months back and he replaced the entire upper piece no questions asked. Used both of them floating the Henry's Fork just last weekend.

being it’s a six wt I’ll mostly be using to fish the snake river( relatively big) and lakes around southern Idaho. I do have a 3wt for mountain streams and 8wt for the silver run in AK.

I’ve never used a fiberglass rod. Do they have a good back bone for casting heavier streamer? I feel like they would be really “whippy” but I have no foundation for that statement as I’ve never used one.

No, they are not good for heavy streamers/flies - they're generally on the slow (lots of flex) side. They make great dry fly rods. If your intent is to chuck streamers and big bugs...you'll want something medium fast/fast (less flex). I've heard good things about the Orvis Clearwater.

If you have a fly shop near you - stop by and they'll have (or should) have a bunch you can handle/cast.

I don’t own a fiberglass fly rod. They throw quite soft. I like a graphite based with a fiberglass tipped spin cast rod though.

I love fishing the snake and Madison river and do it at least once a year. I leave the Utah lakes and high country streams to do that.

Nearest fly shop is an hour away (down side to living in the middle of nowhere) but I’ll check it out next time I go into town.

I lived in Colorado for a while and alpine streams/lakes with a 3wt are the exceptionally fun. Still learning the snake caught plenty for sturgeon. Looking forward to seeing what else I can pull out.

They were for me before I moved to Idaho. The first thing I did was buy a sturgeon setup and hit the river. Wish I had pictures but it’s hard to get them when you by yourself and the fish are 6+ foot long.

Were you using the Redington for big streamers & bugs? That's a slow/soft rod.

That price range, TFO is hard to beat for value.

Since you are coming from Redington, I agree with above comments, find a fly shop and see what type of action you really like. I use my TFO almost as much as my Orvis Helios, but I'm scared to bring the Orvis in the kayak, lol.

Kinda It was the first rod I bought after I was introduced to fly fishing, bought to try and stretch the gap to do a little of everything. Before that I usually borrowed a friends rod.

I'd suggest hitting that fly shop.
