I don't think anybody in here will have an answer for this cuz I don't think anybody has a 4-cylinder 3rd gen Tacoma but I was wondering how hard is general maintenance on the engine for example if the water pump went out or the alternator or a pulley or the belt cuz I think I'm going to pull the trigger on buying 3rd gen Tacoma for my work truck before the end of the year

Yes sir, both manuals. Getting rid of electronics that fail was my main motivation for doing this

Although I have most everything needed to swap it, I don't think i'll be swapping that to 4wd anytime soon. I like the simplicity of a 2wd, less stuff to break and have to work on. Engine stuff is at a standstill.. waiting now on LCE to give me a quote on the rebuild

Weren't you talking about selling your taco at one point? what's happening on that?

Yes sir this is on the red truck. Already getting the itch to go AWD now. I cant find a t-case for a decent price though.. they're all 600+

The motors are very similar to the 2nd gen i4. I have taken mine apart down to a long block and I can tell you that maintenance is super easy. Water pump is an hr and a half job from start to finish. Alternator is two bolts, 20 minute swap. Starter is three bolts and a plug. Tons of room for activities in the engine bay too

Yeah from what I've worked on, the 4 banger has been easiest as far as maintenance goes. I don't think you can go wrong

So, you took apart the green one - motor is out, right? And had the red one as your daily. And then you tore apart your daily? Are you OK? Have you been out in the sun (that'll be the day paleface!)? Too many numbers?

I admire your freaking courage! :transformer::bowdown:

Yes that is correct, motor is in the bed of the truck all torn down

Haha i took the conservative approach and bought another t-case to use to tear apart so i wouldnt risk making the daily undrivable.. I have Fridays off for now so i tried to give myself a few days too in case it went terribly wrong lol.. Was pleasantly surprised everything went smoothly though. The goal was to make it more reliable by getting rid of the ADD and all the 4wd actuators so it was worth the risk:D

    Dang.
Now I really don't know why a motor would scare you. Especially one that is out and not required. As fast as you pull shit, you could just put a matching beater motor back in while you work, and still have two trucks!

Have you been having issues with it or you just think that bc it's an earlier year model? Head gasket issues are a pain in the rear. I seriously hope you aren't having those issues..

It's not the tear down that scares me so much, it's figuring out how to put it all back together without destroying something in the process.. I was hoping to have a solid junkyard motor for it but that didn't end up working out unfortunately.

I was reading and they said they fixed it issue towards the middle of 2005 and my taco was built in October of 2005 so I'm hoping one of my tacos is one of them that was fixed
