So I just got a 2019 SR5 Tacoma and it has the standard start key attached to the key fob to unlock the doors but I want to convert the truck to a push to start and get the the fob that comes with the push to starts. Does anyone know how to do this? I was originally willing to just bite the bullet and pay Toyota to do it and not worry about it but someone at the Toyota service department near me turned me away and said it wasn’t possible and made it seem like that was crazy idea? Never heard of a dealership not wanting starve your wallet.

I wish it were possible, but I don't think anyone's been able to do it yet.

I would love a push to start MT :anonymous:

I work at ford and I know that we can't do that to out vehicles, has to do with a different dashboard wiring harness being the biggest issue, I assume there is some programming difference as well due to how the ecu sees what "position" the key in.

BCM programming is the big one, I'd imagine. It's probably on the high speed CAN network too.

I looked for a little while at possible aftermarket options but never found anything with a well known and supported brand so I settled for a remote start. My goal, cause we all need goals, is to make a flip-key case and have it printed (3d printer) to hold a key blade and the new remote. A single flip fob with awesome range and remote start is all I will do until I get a 4th gen. Good luck in your hunt!

MESO is making a flip fob for the SR/SR5 trucks. Push to start is really convenient, I wanted that feature but I've seen online / TV how easy they steal vehicles that have it. I will wait to get push to start when 4th gen drops.

I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in on this:

I have the "push to start" on my 16 TRD Sport (which was bought used). And don't get me wrong when I say this: but I'm an old school kinda guy and would rather have a regular key start. For me, it's more about "less electronics" going wrong.

I love my push to start. It's a great option. And so far, I've had zero issues out of it. But given my options, I'd probably gone with a regular key.

As far as converting it, I doubt that is possible. Lot of electronics, programming, and etc. to go through.

Yes - I imagine that that seemingly simple project implies opening a huuuge can of worms....

For an off road vehicle - the button would be cool (as it is 'fashionable' BUT I much prefer the key.

The old school ability to use the starter motor in a pinch when the engine dies is valuable when on your own... (I've gone several miles on a toyota starter -UPHILL without damage to the starter - That was back in the first gens.)

I can also do a rolling start when the battery discharges. This is why I am not surprised that the MTs do not have the button.

Keep in mind that the old school push button start (in the 50's- 60's) did not have all the gadgetry attached... it simply engaged the start motor.

Yes remote start is a problem... but I do not need it.

I would stick with what you have man. Even if it is possible, I bet it would be a pain in the rear and on the wallet. Not coming down on you or anything, but if you really wanted that feature, you should have sought it when you bought the truck.

Damn thanks for the feedback, the last truck I came from was keyless and had remote start and I didn’t realize how much I abused the features till now. Oh well it is what it is. Thanks everyone

I seen how there was a theft ring in Canada where they were stealing cars with the proximity key system. Some how possible with technology to clone a key by getting close to your house and where you store the keys, like by the door. They made off with a lot of Toyotas and Lexus, other makes too. Some were found at port in shipping containers, others never recovered. I can see that easily happen anywhere. I will likely be getting an SR5 and while I think the push to start is cool and fashionable now, I like the security of a real key with a chip.

If anyone is going to go through all the work of converting, do me a favor and add a covered toggle switch.

I think that's not just in Canada, US as well. For my own piece of mind I got myself an RFID pouch for the key fob. They're not expensive and they work. With the keys in my pocket while in the pouch ($12-$15 on Amazon) I couldn't start my vehicle. Another option with the spare set is you could wrap it in aluminium foil, works the same, but for the carry-on get the pouch!

My last vehicle, a Chrysler 300C had push button. My 19 SR5 does not. Don't miss it like I thought I would. I do miss touching the door handle to open but that is about it. There is something nice about turning a key tho. Probably less likely to go wrong out of warranty too.
