Just built a sleeping platform in my long bed and I need some advice on what kind of mattress I should get. I know a full-size would fit pretty well but looking for suggestions

I cant say enough good things about my REI Dreamer self-inflating foam pad. It is firmer/better support(and cheaper) than the Exped MegaMat, and deflates much thinner than a foam mattress will ever go.

At 250lbs, I am happy with most upper end backpacking pads with about 3"-4" of thickness. But in my Tacoma, I use a Solace pad (custom sized/built out of Jackson, WY) and it's fantastic!

I have an 8” with memory foam topper I picked up at Walmart. They had 4 or 5 to choose from. I trimmed 6”-8” length-wise to fit my platform. Suuuper comfy!
This is the best pic I have with me:

I have a short bed with softopper and platform built in. I use the softopper tent attachment when I camp and that makes the bed a full 7.5 feet long which is awesome. Then, there is plenty of room.

Mid Rise Leer cap, Liberty Brake controller, sleeping platform in back, nothing exciting :-)
Allot have suggested the Milliard mattress (75 inches x 52 inches x 4 inches) - isn't that a bit wider and longer than the box even with a platform? Does that work - does it just compress a little and fit?

JoAnn Fabrics sells Airtex brand high-density "upholstery foam" in various thicknesses. I was on a time crunch during my build and couldn't source the various mattresses/inflatable pads others have already shared so I went with 3" foam because they had it on the shelf. It works pretty well except I got fatter and the 3" sinks a little bit where my big ass rests. Still doesn't bottom out and feels comfortable to me but 4" might be better if you are on the bigger side. Cost for the 3" foam I think was around $125 about a year ago and that includes some extra cutoffs after I trimmed to fit the bed.

Bedding supplies I use a full size fitted & flat sheet set and a Walmart full size comforter. I close up the camper shell at night but open the sliders, and with just the comforter I'm usually cozy down to around 35-40°F. If it dips lower I add a 50°F Coleman sleeping bag also from Walmart (maroon color, usually cost about $40) and then I'm comfy down to 20°F or maybe slightly below. In the future I will be adding a 12v heated blanket for the really cold nights and winter camping.

I've learned a thing or two from other pop-up owners. I run a layered system to sleep on, because I'm a princess. Feel free to integrate some of it into your beds.

From wood platform up, I stack three things:

    • Base layer of 1/2" interlocking exercise/gym tiles. This is essential for anyone with hip soreness.
    • Amazon basics 4" trifold mattress as my middle layer. Adds more cushion, folds away for traveling.
    • Lucid 5" gel mattress as my top.
I don't expect 9.5 inches of mattress to fit in your beds, but I do strongly recommend the gym mat. That made a bigger difference than stacking two mattresses. :cookiemonster:

Exped MegaMat. Yes, it's expensive. Very comfortable.
