I mounted this on the back of my bed rack as a replacement 3rd brake light about a year ago. recently its been causing the Brake Override Malfunction cel to come on.

I ran the ground to the chassis and I soldered and heat shrinked the "power" to the brake light (rear drivers tail), so I know its not shorting. I just don't understand how I could run it for so long and now it's giving me problems.

Has anyone here tried to tap into tail light wiring and had issues? You would think LED which draws minimal power wouldn't have adverse affects on the electrical system. Perhaps its in the tail light?

The brake override malfunction warning is supposed to only happen when the brake and accelerater pedals are pressed at the same time. A quick Google search shows that there have been a few reports of brake light wiring problems causing false brake override malfunction warnings, but it seems to be very rare.

I think that I'd first disconnect the replacement third brake light, to see if is related, and go from there.

Good luck with it. Please let us know how it turns out.

Check the vehicle's stop bulb for that side (driver's)...see if illuminates or has the (stop) filament broke.

All of the bulbs work properly, and they work for an extended period of time before the warning comes on.

Which makes me think it’s something inside the LED light.

Nope, I just disconnected it and haven’t had an issue since.
I suspect there may be an issue with the aftermarket light itself.

No, just curious about your weird problem. How about letting us know what you eventually find.
