    What happened in this thread...

The MSRP from Toyota hasn't changed. If you are seeing something different on the build tool online, then you configured something differently than before. Prices on dealer lots are a different thing, along with what you can negotiate, but MSRP is set by Toyota and fixed for the year.

    Right.

Huh? Assuming this is tongue in cheek... (but sometimes I'm not sure on TW)

Yep, as many people have said. Especially if you live in one of the areas where they don't seem to negotiate much (or even jack up the price) like the west coast or SE it seems.

That feels like a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away at this point.

Sounds nice, but depending on options the original MSRP can swing wildly by thousands of dollars. What all was on it?

All very fair points and not unreasonable. It is all water under the bridge now, of course. We are where we are.

I don't think there were massive discounts at the start of the pandemic ... at least from what we have seen here ... And, of course, that is a small sample size. There were a few people here who did hit that number but even at the onset of the pandemic it was the exception rather than the rule. I came in at something like 13.5% off and felt I did the best that I could. @TacoBuffet has a theory -- which I think has been proven out -- that it is generally impossible to get more than 15% off. It does happen. but not often. It does seem like some markets are more flexible than others. In my case, the availability was rather limited at the start of the pandemic and that has gotten worse. Believe me I wish I was able to get 15% off but just couldn't do it -- and I was willing to travel far to make that happen. In any case, I am happy with it. if I recall most dealership at the time were pretty content to sit on inventory because as you correctly point out Toyota knows the Tacoma is popular and that they will sell. I must admit that as a casual observer of the auto industry I was surprised that dealers were willing to sit on inventory -- I guess their carrying costs were really low?

Agree with you entirely on the 0% -- although I would be curious to know how many people took that. In my case, the rebate was the better option. That did help move some units but by that time available supply was low and from what I saw -- again, limited observation -- lack of product availability keep pricing and discounts fairly stable.

I think we are in agreement ... my only point is that the discounts were not as large as one would have thought -- certainly compared to other manufacturers.

I also agree with you you won't see anything close to 15% to 18% off for a very long time -- with production low and people snapping up every available Tacoma. I wish that were not the case but I think Toyota managed the whole perfectly.

Here's to hoping everyone gets the truck of their dreams.

Speaking of rebates, does that person who had the inside info know what they are doing for July? I think the current $1500 rebate was slated to end July 5, so wondering if they are going to extend it, lower it, or whatnot. I'm expecting mine in mid to late July, so I really hope they extend it out another month!

Have been a lurker here but i had to signup and post how bad the market currently is... I am in NorCal and there are so few TRD OR DCLB available. One of the dealers told me they are expecting one this weekend and markup on that is $5095. That takes the TRD OR with premium, tech, LED package to $48K after mfg rebate and TT&L extra. What has the world come to :) Patience will have to be my friend since my existing 10 year SUV is not really having any issues.

Congrats on your first post ! :). Good luck. Patience is a virtue ... I feel for everyone who is going to have to wait such a long time for the truck of their dreams. I hear there are plenty of Frontiers and Rangers available thought.

    I kid. I kid.

haha! There's a reason Frontiers and Rangers are available. Heard a review on Ranger the other day "It is hard to have motion sickness as a driver but somehow Ford has made that happen" Hope they do a good job with the Bronco.

The reason they are going to sit on them is because of lack of inventory. Every dealer (maybe not every) that sells new vehicles get a bonus refund type thing at the end of every month for selling a certain amount of a particular model and a certain amount of overall vehicles. It could be either or, it could be both, such as maybe the bonus is 50 new Tacoma sales and 300 overall new vehicle sales for that particular month. This is why some dealers blow vehicles out at invoice, they are selling volume to make their loss back at the end of the month. I'm not terribly familiar with Toyota in this aspect, I've done some marketing several years ago for a couple dealers (enough to at least know what they bought new vehicles for at that time) but not deep enough to know these refund type bonus amounts, I just knew of them. If they can't sell either of these amounts, clearly due to lack of supply, they don't get their bonus so they may as well hang on to the inventory to sell them for as much as they can, which as you've stated, people will still buy even if the only deal they get is a rebate from Toyota.

I think once things settle down, 10% off MSRP will be still a good deal. 15% off or more will still be rare, it will be the case that you happen to be sale #49 and #299 (in my above example) you would be an exception and get an extremely amazing deal. The closer they get to those bonus numbers the more deals they are willing to flex on, unfortunately it is just pure luck. You can time it better by being a deal closer to the end of the month but no guarantees.

Annnnnd, that's my monologue on the why part lol and I could very well be very wrong but my experience working for several dealers this was the case.

100%. I wish Ford nothing but the best. They are a great American company. I tried to like the Ranger and actually looked at it. I might not know what I am doing but that truck cost a lot more than the Tacoma I ended up getting. I saw one truck on the lot actually priced higher than a F-150. Poke around in the new Ranger forums and you will also see the problems people are having ...

Poke around in the TW forums and you might not have such a high opinion of the Tacoma either! Lots of people complaining about problems too! But yeah, still not buying a Ranger...

I agree with you ... and while you could be wrong I am fairly certain that I could be wrong too ... ! One thing that all of the research I have done is that the old model on how dealers used to make money is completely gone now. These guys are essentially financial instruments and one thing that they can do is sit on inventory for longer periods of time because the carrying cost has been so low -- money is practically free now. So the upside of selling a car could be greater in value than the bonus from Toyota -- or a good dealer can navigate and get both.

All interesting discussion but I should probably leave it there since people in this thread are focused on what people are actually paying -- sorry, guys, for the digression.

I do hope we get back to the documented price / percentage off MSRP (before taxes, etc.). I found those numbers really interesting ...

no dealers in Southern California are doing Costco right now, they say the program is “suspended.” I’ve tried San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles.

True. There weren’t. They were the same as they have always been. At least they were the same as the 2016 version of this thread. The 0% apr oddly enough leads people to believe they are automatically getting a great deal. In 2016 I was on the high end of discount range. This time I am low middle of good deals ~12%.
