Is it just me or does the 2.7l suck as much gas as a 3.4 v6? Like I get 16mpg which is crappy I think but a 3.4l is getting 18-20. I’m running 31s on stock 4:10 gears on stock alloy Toyota wheels.

I wondered the same thing! My V8 5.2L Jeep got the same gas mileage as my lil 2.7 . There I was thinking I could ride forever on a full tank

I get like 16-18 average in my 2.7L, which is a 2WD! The fact that my area is in the middle of a heat wave and I am a prolific A/C user does not help matters!

My 2003 3.4 can get 21 regularly hwy when I am cruising at 65 or less. (Key)
Never got that with my old 2.7 manual, but I beat that thing back in the day.

I'm normally at 19.5-20ish running 265/70/17s. 4x4 5spd. A/C and the occasional load may vary things.

I got 21-22mpg regularly with my 2.7 4x4 5 speed on 265-70-16 tires. 4:30 gear set helped a lot from what I understand.

Dropped to 20mpg now that I went to 265-75-16 tires.

Yup! My old 2.7 2WD averaged 18 or so. I get 19-20 in my v6 3rd gen. Go figure.

@Allex95, is yours a regular cab or extended cab? 16 seems a little low. When I bought mine 5 years ago it had 85K miles. Just for the hell of it I changed the spark plugs, cleaned the throttle body, MAF sensor and the little EGR filter. I changed all oils to synthetic. I've always been happy with this truck's MPG. Bone stock with 4:30 gears and P265/70r16 tires I got 21 City 23/24 HWY. Later on with 235/85r16 tires, stock gears and a little armor, I got 19 City 22 HWY. Now with more armor, OME suspension, 4:88 gears and 255/85r16 tires, I'm getting 17/18 City 20 HWY. I use the A/C all the time and flog it merging onto the freeway. I've never consciously tried to drive it with fuel economy in mind. I've found I get the best MPG with 88 or 89 octane, not regular or premium.

I used to have a 2nd gen V6 DCSB that was stockity stock stockerton and it could barely do 16 or 17 Highway if I feathered the throttle for an entire tank of gas. One time it got 22 MPG on a road trip that was mostly downhill on two lane highways with 55 to 65 MPH speed limits. I was never able to duplicate that again. Sometimes in winter on E85 and a little bit of 4WD usage, it would get 12 MPG to a tank. But with a couple dogs in the cab and few things in the bed for a trip to the family cabin, it felt no faster than a 4 cylinder. I FUCKING hated that truck. The only 4500 lb. under-powered gas pig I would ever consider owning again, would be a 70 or 80 series Land Cruiser.

First question is....is it running right? It's a 24 year old truck.

I can get 23-24 out of mine if I take it easy on the hwy, but it's tough to get below 20 around town. 4.30 gears, 235/75/15 tires

My V6 should be getting 18-20 but only gets 15. The v4 should be getting 25ish IMO. Hearing that it actually gets less than 20 is just sad

Toyota should bring back the true mini truck. V4, about the size and weight of a camry with a little bit more height. Basically an El Camino, but good.

It’s in good shape The spark plugs aren’t in bad condition prob could be timen to replace them. I haven’t cleaned the throttle body cause I’m concerned it may make it run worse or the same. All 4 injectors are good as I know of. How do you tell if one is not working well?

If it's maintained, it's more about how you drive than the size of the engine anyway. I pulled off 23.7 in my 4.0l v6 frontier today going down the interstate at 73ish.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of cleaning throttle bodies either. So many ways to go wrong.

When was the last time valve clearances were checked?
