Been wanting to get a manual pop up sunroof for my 97 single cab 4x4 auto, asked around and it’s around 400-$600, should I get one? And I dont really know if tacomas came with sunroofs I see some with them but no single cabs, Ive seen some 80’s, 90’s toyo pickup trucks with sunroofs and I think itll look nice on mine, ik leaking is the main concern but Im a maintenance guy, so lmk thx

If you feel you can`t live without one go for it.

I can only guess they got better leaking seems to be a given .

If your weather does not change much in temperature my theory the thermal cycling caused the leaks

Major commitment cutting that big hole in a perfectly good roof, right? Used to have an '01 DC with a sunroof, and my wife always complains about not having it anymore, so I've thought about doing that myself. We'll probably just get a different truck instead.

    If you're over 5'6" don't get a sunroof.
    Second thought

I wouldn’t. Out here with the intense sun you seldom use it and for the most part it’s kept shut. Not to mention there’s no shade cover for it so no matter what there’s always going to be sun beating down on you.

Plus the aforementioned risk of leak.

My 96 reg cab has one just like your taking about. The previous owner had it put in. It don’t leak at all. I don’t open it much. It does get wind noise around the seal around 60mph. If I pull down on the handle the noise goes away. I do need to replace the seal on it soon...if I can find one. I’m having a hard time finding the correct seal I need. My biggest complaint is there’s no shade. I’m in Florida and the sun baking through (it is tinted) but it really sucks. The ac pretty much has to be on high on sunny days. Which is pretty much every day. I’m going to end up making some kind of shade for it and see how that does. Depends on where you are and how the weather is. If I actually had much fall or spring weather to have it open might be different. In my kind of climate I’d recommend not getting one.

After working as a shop foreman at an auto trim/upholstery for many years, I've learned 2 important things.

    1) Never buy/own a convertible top auto.
    2) Never buy/own anything with a sunroof/moonroof.

That’s a hard pass from me.

Factory sunroofs are perfectly fine, in most cases. But aftermarket sunroofs can and will leak.

The t-tops in my 1986 300ZX are factory and 90% of the cars in the wild leak like a sieve. It rusts the floor pans out.

I installed my own. Never a leak, but do be careful about cutting holes & keeping screws tight. Happy owner...no leaks. If it does...RTV.
